A minor Pentatonic+ A few notes=C Major?

I've been playing 22 years. Like Paul said....i Still don't get the essence of it. The parts above relating major and minor are clues. But rather than memorizing the implications I want to understand the core theory... like why are the notes in a cord there to start with and then why do 7 and minor sound shapes relate. I'm still not answered here either though appreciate clues.... best I can figure so far is by relating the harmonics to cord content. Can someone point to the core math?
Thanks.

ignore Kerouac, use math.

Elliot, it's about ratios.

1:1 - unison
1:2 - octave
2:3 - perfect 5th
4:5 - major 3rd

i'm just getting into this, so that's literally all i know about it. but it's really interesting to me.

Thanks Help, that's what I'm going for. Its funny googling for it I feel like I'm reading about Godel Escher and Bach while launching into information theory. I think your ratios are closer. So far I've noticed on the E string the dominant harmonics are the notes in the e-cord (even the Ab which I was surprised was readily there in a harmonic).

you might want to check out a book on tempered tuning, and the compromises it makes on the guitar and piano. there's a lot of history of the instrument, but also a lot about Pythagoras and they usually get into the physics of music too.

Harmonics: going for lowest 1st on the E string:

1. E 12 = 1:2
2. B 7 = 1:3 ???
3. A 5 = 1:4 ???
4. Ab 4 = 1:5? (same harmonic as c#9th ???)

Does this mean we really are into philosophy to get to the minors, 7ths, and scales?

don't go by the harmonics on the fretboard. the harmonics are simply dead nodes where the string vibrations intersect. yes, there is a pattern to them, but it has to do with sympathetic vibrations and neither of us are anywhere near up to that.

you're not much of a history guy, otherwise i'd make a couple of recommendations.

Well its interesting how intertwined with religion/history it all goes between math and music. Funny I never looked into it before... this article was an interesting introduction:
