I don't really think it's the contours - rather it's a sort of illusion that results from the exaggerated grain. I think that the grain makes the contours look much deeper than they otherwise would.

Beware people. There are more than a few articles about wolf tones, dead spots and such when dealing with a PRS Custom 24 with a trem. I had one and it was unusable.
