2025 Concert Thread

Of regional interest - these guys were big in Madison in the 70s/80s. Butch Vig started Smart Studios and produced records by Nirvana (Nevermind), Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, etc. and he and Duke Erikson went on to form the band Garbage.

How was Mr. Cray?

He's been on my must see list for decades, but he either doesn't swing our way or the stars don't align when he does. Just a killer guitarist and singer...and his music grooves in the best way(s).
It's been 20 years since I last saw him but he sounds exactly like Robert Cray. He's so uniquely his own thing, you're never going to mistake him for anyone else.

His voice hasn't lost anything at all. It's kind of crazy. And he's still a great player. Killer band too, of course.

He swapped guitars (maybe 4 total? 3 Strats and a Tele) for just about every song. His tone is still super clean and super dry, and he's one of those less-is-more guys. Really tasteful. The whole show was a treat.

I always thought that he and Jimmie Vaughan were cut from the same cloth, and I like that style.

Not my show, but this past Sunday night:

Nice, I've seen Robert a couple of times. He never disappoints. Totally underrated player and singer. He has a great voice, IMO.

I have two shows lined up, one in April and one in May.

I’ve seen three shows this year. In January I went out and saw doom metal legends Trouble at the Cobra Lounge in Chicago. Fabulous show.

In February I went and saw night one of the Tom Bukovac/Guthrie Trapp show at Martyrs in Chicago. Killer show. On the way out I ran into a pal of mine who also happened to be the guy who booked the show. We were chatting about how good the show was and then he goes “if you wanna come back tomorrow night I’ll put you on the list”. I ended up taking him up on the offer and it was just as great the second night. I don’t think I’ve ever gone and seen the same band on back to back nights by myself that wasn’t work related in my life. No regrets either.

Going to see AJ Croce in Carmel, IN in April. Just saw him last fall, but he was doing mostly his dad's music at that show. He's got a new album out, and hopefully this show will be all his music.

I’ve never seen him either. I should, he plays here often it seems. The drummer in one of my bandmates other band is in a UFO tribute band that plays out quite a bit. Lights Out Chicago!!!
My cousin from Colorado told me about the tour too. He said he hopes UFO drummer Andy Parker will he on drums.
He said Andy Parker is currently in a UFO tribute band.

Maybe Axle will hope on stage for Love to Love?

How big was UFO in other parts of the country? They were pretty big here, lots of rock radio airplay and sold out shows. The International Amphitheatre is where a lot of their live album was recorded and they used to sell out two nights which would have been 24,000 tickets every time they hit town.

Wolf Trap dropped another round of shows, including:
- Erykah Badu
- John Legend
- Ray LaMontagne
- Steve Winwood

They have 30+ dates they could still fill in, but I'm not sure how much more they'll do. The member presale mailer they sent included Al Green on June 22, but that's never been announced and he doesn't have any 2025 dates on his website.

Shaping up to be good year after a couple of fallow ones

Manic Street Preachers in April.

James in May. 13 year old nephew had a ticket but they didn't get a kids licence so just me and Mrs jbj mow

Springsteen in Liverpool in June. Going with my OCD high risk aversion nuclear safety officer pal. I've over 2 decades of form organising gig trips, lads weekends etc... and the lads still give me it tight so I might have gone in hard on the transport just to fuck with him - tight train time after my work on the Friday, it'll be fine but it'll drive him nuts worrying about me getting away from work. Coming home Sunday is a total cluster fuck (no fault of my own) so I've worked in plenty of transfers long enough we can grab a beer.

Oasis in August

Mrs JBJ has just booked Castle for later in the year. I'm pretty sure they're supporting oasis but it'll be a great gig either way.

I’m way down on the Swanee River far far away at the Swanee Spring Reunion Festival this weekend.
The Kitchen Dwellers really impressed me tonight. Best modern jamgrass band I’ve heard here so far.
Besides being excellent players those boys were slick as hell with their transitions, dynamics, and tasteful use of effects. Infamous String Dusters were impressive. Also Fireside Collective. But the Kitchen has taken It to another level it seemed to me.
Tomorrow Sam Bush and Peter Rowan are the headliners.
