2024 Your Year in Gear

No guitar related stuff this year

I gave myself a Vibro Champ Reverb that I'm quite happy with.

Brought it to rehearsal and it did the job nicely. I've been asked to sideman occasionally with a local singer-songwriter duo. They bring an acoustic guitar and a stage piano, and the amp is perfect for that kind of setup. Punchy and very Americana-esque but not too loud and rumbly, and the trem is really the only effect I need for that.

Forgot to mention this little giant....

If you don't have a big modeler like a Kemper or Fractal... Pick one of these little bad boys up... I got it as a Christmas gift, but they're only about $60!! Some of the stock IRs sound really usable... I was able to run Tuner -> Tumnus -> IR -> Sheeran Looper and it sound pretty damned good.

Apparently it's pretty easy to load your own IRs as well and if you delete one of them (would make sense to erase or move the one in the first slot) it can act as a bypass. I'll keep my favorites of the stock, see if I can copy over some from the Soldano, and use the last couple for my favorite Acoustic IRs from the Nux Optima Air. Will make a super useful Swiss Army Knife... and it's built like a little tank with a 1/4" and XLR out.
I have one of these too. A very helpful little box and I can confirm that some of the default IRs sound pretty good. I’ve gotten some decent results for direct bass recording using the Catalinbread SFT through the stock SVT IR.

I’ve shifted around some stompboxes I wasn’t using for some I wanted to use. Best one I got was a Catalinbread Formula 55 which does a pretty good job of providing Tweed Deluxe type color and making things sound more gooder as an always on sort of thing.

Picked up a new Reverend Crosscut from CME early last year for a stupid price because it was a demo/blem because of some minimal wear on the bridge plate. Extra discounted because it was a discontinued colorway. I thought I was gonna use it as a pickup platform and swap in some boutique underwound PAFs, but the stock Railhammers sound really great in it so I use it as is. Super versatile and very sturdy—like most Rev stuff.

I swapped out my Jazzmaster for a PRS McCarty because I once again got tired of all the Jazzmaster quirks and didn’t want to sink a bunch of mods into be being less annoyed until I finally got fed up. (I got the JM in a trade for something else that I didn’t bond with…so this has basically been a revolving slot in my gear hoard.) Was pretty swiftly reminded why I’m not into the whole Gibson-style set neck, shorter scale, humbuckers thing. Just another case of “I think Jazzmasters are cool—um, no. Hey, I think LP-type things are cool, so maybe that’s the answer—um, also no” which I’ve done multiple times now.

Did eventually use part of the proceeds from selling the PRS to pick up a Harmony Juno this fall. The Juno is a model I’ve been eyeing for years. I’m really digging it and playing it a ton.

So now I basically own three variations on telecaster-type guitars all with different pickups and feel fairly settled. I which means I’ll probably do something dumb and get into an SG next year or something.

I sold nothing. I’m a gear hoarder. :bigg:

(edit) I forgot that I bought a Boss, Katana Go, headphone amp-modeler, earlier this year. I lost it somewhere in my house and have not yet found it. :baimun:

I love the Blacktop FT pickups. Some folks get them mixed up with the humbuckers in disguise pups you had in there. The blacktops are like Filtertrons, but kick at 7k. Great compromise.

1. On a lark I bought a couple of cheap Squier Sonics marked down on the Fender website. A single HB Esquire and the SS Mustang. My plan was to down tune the Esquire and experiment with heavier music. The Mustang's cheap top loading bridge was a bitch to get dialed in but once I got it right and did a thorough fret dressing...its a keeper, I really like it.
The Esquire basically needed the same treatment but I really havnt bonded with it. I'll pass it on to some needy kid when the opportunity arises.
2. Pedals-RC Booster, MXR bass comp on the way.
3. I found a Player II Tele to my liking and added it to the stable.
4. And most recently, a Sans Amp Para Driver DI, mainly for my upright, but its really for anything I need to go direct with.

I sprang for some Tone Specific strat pups and they sound amazing...pricey little fucks though. Just need some knobs to finish this one up.

Got my acoustic rig together. Pretty happy with it but I may swap that boss out. Good enough for now.

Very little in the way of gear this year. The Boss ES-5 and a Line 6 HX One is probably all if I remember right. I'm just very happy with the stuff I have at my disposal these days.

Only thing I'm considering for next year is a double bass, as I need that sometimes for the more jazzy stuff in the Slagsvold band. Those things are expensive though... :embarrassed:

You are into a rabbit hole there. Tread carefully.
My 2cents -all plywood is fine. Focus on construction quality, and it’s super crucial to get it set up by somebody who really knows what they are doing.

Pedals
  • Didn't sell anything, but my original Mooer Wahter died. I liked it enough that I bought another one.
  • Added a Mooer Pitch Box to try and avoid carrying extra guitars to play 3 songs downtuned. Didn't work out for that but I'm getting some useable sounds out of it anyway.

Modellers
  • Bought a Lekato branded Tank G Modeller as the big brother to the Cube Baby I bought last year. £80 but it can be used to profile stuff like a Kemper unit. Not had enough time to get the best out of this yet but the software is way better than the Cube Baby's, has an XLR balanced line out and 36 storage locations, and has a rechargeable battery built in meaning I don't need to worry about power outlet availability at the front of the stage. If/when I've got my head fully round it, I'll write a detailed review.

Guitars
  • Won a PRS SE CE24 - see thread. Chuffed to bits with that one!

Other bits
  • Lekato 5.8Ghz Wireless system.
  • My long serving Crafter clip on tuner died so bought a Lekato branded one from Amazon. It's more sensitive than my old one but I've got used to it.
  • Got given a Hercules GS200B folding guitar stand for my birthday, and liked it so much I bought another. Both fit in the pocket of my Mono double guitar bag which helps to reduce the load in/out at gig/rehearsals.
  • Gokko Mini Pedal Power Supply - cracking little box that has 2x100ma, 2x300ma and 2x500ma isolated outputs at 9V. Suits my pedal board nicely and has helped clean up some hum issues from daisy chaining.
  • Joyo ZGP-W USB to 9V Power Connector. This little genius bit of kit can be powered by a USB power source, in my case a phone power bank, and outputs up to 400ma at 9V DC that can be used to power pedals, allowing me options to go wall wart free at the front of stage when needed. It can also act as an isolater if you've got a noisy pedal on a daisy chain or to completely isolate a noisy supply from a pedal.

This year is still young but I've already ordered a pedal case, a power supply, some patch cables, strings, and a bag of picks.

:embarrassed:
