What kind of guitarist/musician do you actually want to be?

Seems like a silly question, but if you're like me there is always something new to learn or a new direction that you want to take. Is there ever an end point? The "final destination" where you are who you want to be musically?

I've never aspired to be more than someone who can strum some chords while he sings, so anything now is just icing on the cake. :hippie:

I want to be a sellout. Let me write one song that will make me millions, then I'll live the rest of my days watching reruns of my Where Are They Now? episode. :embarrassed:

Umm, good. Really, I want to become proficient enough to carry a song solo, or in a trio format, so that I can cover both rhythm and lead/fills as need be, and also be able to jam and play with others fluidly and creatively depending on what space is available in the song/group. Fluidity is tough for me now as I think so much, and my rhythm playing skills still really suck for practical, real world use.

Well, as you said, I always want to keep learning new things. But, overall, I am pretty much the guitarist/musician I want to be.

I want to be the kind of guitarist who can play whatever I want whenever I want! After 26 years at it I am still not there. I do not think there is ever an end to what you can learn. There is always another chord, scale, technique or style out there to work on. Half the fun for me is the journey.

Highly paid....:embarrassed:

But seeing that will never happen, I just want to be good enough to be able to do what I need to do on stage with professionalism, taste, and excellence.

I want to be Bob Brozman, Hollywood Fats, Jimmie Vaughan, Duane Allman and Marcel Bianchi all rolled into one.

Throw in some Big Bill Broonzy and John Fahey.

Given my late start and my limited time to play, I would just like to be able to strum a good selection of songs and sing along just in case I get the nerve to do it in front of someone. I'd actually love to be able to write songs. I'd like to be able to improvise rhythm and solo for my own enjoyment or to "jam" with someone else or to be able to create backing music to create videos for my other hobbies like fishing, for example. Doesnt have to be incredibly high level, just adequate. And I think I'd like to be able to "sit in" on a tune or two in a band setting.

Not setting the bar very high but I have had to realize that shooting for more than that at this point is unrealistic. I just dont have the time to invest in a deeper level of learning. Actually, I choose not to. I have two jobs and family responsibilities that mandate my time and what's left I have to decide which hobbies to alocate to.

They only thing I can't do that I really want to is play the Chet Atkins style. Not be as good as him, that would be impossible, but just be able to play that finger style way he does and do it well.

technically proficient enough to play what's in my head.

These.

But instead of sitting around watching reruns, I'd want to be able to just make music for the sake of making music. Even if it never sees the light of day outside of my bazillion-dollar home studio, I would just want to have the freedom to create and try things musically... with zero pressure.

Speaking as a pianist, I'd like to be able to improvise properly. Right now, I can usually work out a key from being given a few chords and then noodle around, but it doesn't sound the way I want it to. I'd like to be able to just sit down and accompany anybody playing whatever they feel like playing and have it sound right.

This is a big factor for me as well. I like to think I could do more than I am doing, but time is not there. And this month, I am just hoping for the ability to pay my dang bills due to people not paying their bills to me. Grr!

A pure chameleon by being able to change from style to style from a dead stop switch and command all of those concepts with no hesitation.

*Forgot to add working one where there are no issues....
