I don't know much about Pitt, so I can't tell how they perform against the spread. I liked the fact that they beat Vtech, though. My sister went to WVU, my brother went to Pitt, and I went to PSU. I remember when those teams were all rivals who played each other each season.
 
I don't follow my alma mater as the University of Hawaii have a tough time competing against bigger schools - ie: USC in Game 1. When the Warriors were in the Sugar Bowl (2007) against Georgia we got our tail spanked big time. It is too bad bigger players wouldn't go there to improve the team.

Without a doubt. I don't even watch NFL football. I couldn't care less about any of the teams. I don't care for the direction the rules are going. Because of the pay-off system there is no reason to watch the regular season. As long as your halfway decent you make the pay-offs. I dont feel like I should like a team because they are in a nearby city, at least with college you actually have a connection to the team.

I don't really care for college football and never will until they have a some kind of playoff system or they get rid of the cupcake games. Their current way of ranking teams is pathetic. When the number 1 team beats the number 10 team, the number 10 team will drop to 15 or so. Isn't the number 1 team supposed to beat the number 10 team?

In the NFL, all of the teams in a division play the same opponents and the best team from each division goes to the playoff, with a few wildcard teams. In college football, the teams in a conference play their own conference and then teams that could barely beat high school teams. That seems silly to me.

Interesting, I feel exactly the opposite.
 
I'm mainly with the rev on this one. I don't watch the NFL. I think the ranking system gives you a decent picture of who the best teams in college football are in general, but hairs can usually be split over specific ranks (1 vs. 2 or 12 vs 13); a limited playoff of perhaps the top 8 teams would give the most accurate result. This year, though, I don't think anyone can question Alabama's current dominance.

In general I prefer college sports, but it's strongest in football and basketball (while I ignore the NFL, I am openly disgusted with the NBA).

With me, the more I understood the game the less I liked the NBA. I feel it's not too far of a stretch to say the NBA is to basketball as the WWE is to wrestling.

I think the ranking system is terrible, which is why I don't like it. The problem is there are 12 games in the college season and most of the games are played in conference and then the others are against cupcakes, with maybe one tough game. There needs to be more out of conference games against decent opponents.

Look at the year UF beat Ohio State in the national championship game. That season Ohio was #1 all year. They beat #2 Texas and #2 Michigan and got thumped by UF in the title game. UF was never in the top 3 until after the SEC championship game and they wrecked Ohio State. There is no way Ohio was the best team that year when they lost by that much to UF. Hell, Arkansas probably should have been ranked higher than 9 that year, they did better against UF than Ohio did. I still can't believe they let Alabama in the title game last year. They didn't even play in the SEC championship game, so they not only were they not the best team in the country, they were not even the best team in the SEC west. Why even have a regular season or conference championship games?

I don't think there is any doubt Alabama was the best team in college football last year. Any ranking system will be imperfect, but a playoff will ruin college football just like it ruins college basketball. You might say but I love March madness. Fine, but it has made the regular season totally irrevelevent. I would say there is already a football playoff system, it's called the regular season. for the most part if you lose your out, which makes every game important. The problem with the disparity of teams like you mentioned with Ohio State is you have one conference that is way better than all of the other conferences. The Big Ten, 12, Pac 12, ACC, and Big East have no where near the talent and depth of teams as the SEC. Sure there is one or two decent teams then a bunch of slugs. Thats why Oregon sets the world on fire in the regular season then gets hammered in the bowls every year. Look at the Big 10 this year, there is not one good team in the entire conference. WV looks pretty good, but they would get pummeled by Alabama or LSU. There aren't very many stand out teams this year, but that's why they play the game.

I'm afraid I don't take your point. Florida beat OSU in the title game and were therefore ranked above them after the game, weren't they? As for comparing opponents by the way they play against common opponents is somewhat useful, the transitive property of math don't necessarily hold for sports contests. I do agree with you though that teams should play much tougher out of conference schedules. As much as I dislike Notre Dame, I can't argue with their schedule (except their penchant...I know I know rooted in tradition...for beating up on the service academies).

Well the ranking system had OSU #1 all year and they got crushed by UF. So why bother ranking the teams at all until after the season? Rarely the #1 in the first week week ends up winning it.

Alabama being in the national championship game last year made the regular season irrelevant. They got beat in their home stadium by a team in their conference and still played in the title game. And the regular season is not irrelevant in NCAA basketball. If you don't win in the regular season, you don't go to the tournament.

If college football would start some regular cross conference games (there are some, but they are random with no standard like the NFL) it would improve it, that and getting rid of the cupcake games.

All you have to do is be 50/50 to make the basketball tournament. If you remember Alabama played and lost to LSU who they played in the national title game. If you think there were two better teams last year, I like to know who they were.

Alabama being in the title game made the regular season and conference championship games irrelevant last year. I think Oklahoma State should have gotten a shot. They lost 1 game last season in OT and that being the same week of the plane crash that killed the women's basketball coaches.

If you follow your logic about Bama losing to LSU, then UF should have never played OSU in the title game in 2007. It should have been Michigan vs OSU. After all, Michigan only lost by 3 to OSU and Michigan was on the road. Alabama should have lost their chance for a title shot when they lost to LSU, just like Michigan lost their shot by losing to OSU.

There really is no way to use a ranking system nation wide without flaws and there is no way to institute a meaningful playoff system. It is an imperfect system that has provided a great deal of excitement for years. There are a lot of teams who will never get a chance at a national title but their games are still relavent, their stadiums are still the most fun place to be on Saturday, and the beer and food consumed watching them still taste awesome. I think most of the fun of college football, or any college sport, is the passion on the field and in the stadium. It's fun to root for your team in bowl game or a midseason rivalry. It's just fun.

The NFL is fine. I think the way we, or at least I, watch games has changed a bunch since fantasy football but it works better for me. I grew up a Dolphin fan and will watch if I happen to be home but generally I dont sit at home on the weekend long enough to watch a full game of anything so I like zipping back and forth through some games to see how my players are doing.

Overall, I like the college game better. Not everyone is a superstar and not everyone is going to make a living playing football but they are going to give it hell on Saturday.

don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching a good college football game, I just don't get into the whole national champion thing or the rankings. I think the way they do that is the worst in sports.
