Can 320 grit sandpaper be used to smooth out the back of a neck on a guitar?

I have a guitar with a lacquered (or whatever coating) neck that feels too sticky, i should try to knock it down with that stuff.

That's what I did with my SX. Love the thick round neck, but the finish was just so thick and got sticky. Did a great job and gave it more of a satin feel.
 
Actually, the neck still has those piece of shit tuners, and I have a tele bridge for it... I think I may have to plug the string holes in the back and relocate the ferrules... It needs electronics, control plate, pickups, and pick guard... I gave away some parts because they were shit, and some guy needed stuff to put together a tele for a family member who was terminally ill, and missed playing guitar... The other stuff went on my first tele build...
