Did we ever decide the next recordingfest?

I think we should do one sometime called "Songs in the Key of Douche" where we either cover songs by douchebag artists or subject matters.

Not to my knowledge.

Also, working on mine. Multitrack recording is fucking HARD.
 
it's not so bad.
just takes getting used to.
you'll be having a lot more fun a lot sooner than you think.:)

when I started, I had no internet connection, and thus had nowhere to ask for help.
you've got some smart folks hgere to help you out, should you need it.

it does take some time getting used to , for sure.

especially if you've no idea what you are doing, as was my case.:embarrassed:
 
OKAY, i think i've got it. I can't really sing as well (read "loud") as i'd like because of the fact that this mic overdrives so damn easily. (it's the cheap Rock Band USB mic. :facepalm:)

I read somewhere that the singers for AC/DC record vocals at a whisper level. Not sure if it is true or not but the idea is we probably all tend to sing louder when recording than we need to. Vocals can be made to sound big in the mix. Something I am working hard on right now.
 
I don't think Brian Johnson is whispering. You have to get some good air flowing to sound like that. Now granted, he's using head voice a lot, so he's probably not really screaming his ass off, but it's gonna be louder than a whisper for sure.

I'm not sure whether the guy used whisper to exagerate and meant "not very loud at all" or if he was insunuating that it really was quiet. Also not sure if it was accurate. The point he seemed to be making is that we typically think louder is better when we record whether it be voice or amps. I guess the line could be drawn to using one of the newer amps designed to sound good at lower levels to record. It is a lot quieter than cranking a stack but sounds as big on the recording. I know for me, trying to get to those tougher notes I tend to yell. Maybe the better approach is to learn to sing them at a much quieter level and see what happens once you start hitting them with compression.

I would actually be interested to know if there is any truth to the whisper level thing though. Might have to spend some time on google later.
 
There is at times a whisper track to add body to the vocals. I've done it on a couple of songs that I recorded. Most recently on my cover "OK" from the recordingfest before last.

Of course fromwhat I understand some large production pop songs have like 50 tracks of vocals, so there's bound to be one in there somewhere.
