Did any of you see the fake Deep Purple back in 1980?

Did you see the fake Deep Purple?

I went down a rabbit hole this morning thinking about the bogus Deep Purple tour of the early 80's and the subsequent disappearance of the original DP singer Rod Evans. Basically, Evans was recruited by a shady promoter to front a fake Deep Purple band on a tour, and after a number of disastrous shows and legal action by the real Deep Purple, he was sued down his skivvies and pretty much vanished into thin air. No one (or practically no one) has been able to track him down since then, and he was a no-show for his RRHOF induction with the rest of the legit Deep Purple. A shame, really, because Evans was a pretty great singer.

There's a great old-school website about the whole fiasco here: https://www.dpac.at/Bogus_Deep_Purple_1980.html

And a good writeup here:

(Or at least there was this morning. Site seems to be down now.)

Footage from Mexico:

Anyhow, since there's a lot of middle-aged rockers here, I'm thinking surely someone here saw this tour. Please regale us with your tales of the crummy Deep Purple.

(I could swear I vaguely recall hearing about this at the time, since I was the right age and demographic when they played my town, but it's not a show I or anyone I know saw.)

Thankfully I missed that one. I remember people complaining about it. At 14, my mom wouldn't let me go to concerts yet. Rod was definitely the weak link for early Purple.
I'm going to keep a good thing going and not click on your video.

I did see the Blackmore Version twice on the Perfect Strangers tour. I've seen the Steve Morse version 6 times. Hopefully Morse gets back on that horse. He's not touring live anymore due to his wifes battle with cancer. Mojo and hope for Mrs. Morse.

I wanted to see Deep Purple around the time of Made in Japan, but my mother had heard they were the loudest band in the world and wouldn't let me go.

Too bad. My mom wouldn't have cared about that. She even bought me tickets for the Who around that time, when they were in the Guinness Book of Records as the loudest band. She helped make me what I am today -- half deaf! (Just kidding, mom. It's entirely due to my own stupidity.)

Only time I saw Deep Purple was on their Perfect Strangers tour. 1985? I think.

I didnt know about Steve Morse' wife battling cancer

That was '85 or '86 I remember it was a loud show.

Hi Tralfaz, could you please tell me what town that was? I'm working on reconstructing the "New" Deep Purple 1980 tour schedule. Thank you very much!

No. I never knew about it.

I bought tickets to see the real DP in the late 80’s. But, our tickets got stolen in the mail and a group of us missed the show as a result. I’ve never seen DP live.

Hi everyone, I'm a new member on the forum, I run the website dpac.at about the new Deep Purple 1980 group. These are the DP 1980 tour dates I've found out so far, perhaps it makes a good discussion and maybe someone can contribute some new info.

The tour started in May with two shows in Texas:
17/05/80 - Amarillo, TX - Civic Center, Auditorium
18/05/80 - El Paso, TX - Civic Auditorium

Three known dates in June. The video here is from the Mexico show (about 50,000 people in the audience!), but guitarist Tony Flynn also remembers that the full concert in Phoenix had been filmed by the house camera crew, but no one has found the video yet. According to Tony, the then-owner of the Celebrity Theatre (his name is David Manusevitz) still may have it. That would be an unbelievable find!
21/06/80 - San Bernardino, CA - Swing Auditorium
28/06/80 - Mexico City, MEX - Aztec Olympia Stadium/Estadio INDE
29/06/80 - Phoenix, AZ - Celebrity Theatre (2 shows, filmed)

July 1980 was well booked, including four shows in Honolulu, Hawaii, but also took the band to Canada for the first time. Although, some New York gigs had been cancelled after riots at The Factory in Staten Island, on July 17th.

25/07/80 - Staten Island, NY - Wagner College (cancelled)

30/07/80 - McAllen, TX - La Villa Real, Convention Center
31/07/80 - Houston, TX - Music Hall

It seems there had been a couple of gigs in September, but less info can be found. The 1980 tour finished with their last show on September 20th in Rouyn-Noranda in Canada. Two further gigs had been announced for October 1980, but they didn't happen. About the Arcadia show, I read that there was some info about it in the Arcadia High School 1980 year book (or '81?), perhaps somebody can help with info.
??/09/80 - Arcadia, CA - Arcadia High School, Gymnasium (High Auditorium)

Hope, it wasn't too long, and you enjoy it.
