I'm not a gunhugger, I'm very anti-NRA, I lost my sister to an asshat psycho with a gun...
However, I am also a gun owner that believes in tighter restrictions and tougher laws. I bought my AR-15 in my early 20s... because I could. I had no illusions about "needing" it, or about it being good for anything other than precisely what it was designed for. I grew out it eventually. I still own other firearms though. I've had the same 9mm Baretta for 25 years.
I just within the last hour had to put a .22 LR round into a rabbit that had been injured beyond saving on our property.
Am I a snowflake?

I certainly enjoy shooting as a new hobby, and like guitars having one type of gun just don’t seem enough. I still don’t feel the need to carry a gun, don’t know if I ever will. I don’t mind the thought of tighter restrictions but as a law abiding citizen I would not tolerate being denied access to my free speech rights and I don’t see how the second amendment rights are any less important then the first. Certainly we all ( as citizens, I certainly don’t want to detract from other topics on here ) should be able to have a civil conversation about these matters. I really don’t feel the NRA speaks for me, I certainly disagree with much of their narrative today.

Just like playing guitar, most people focus on the gear and not the fundamental skills
I’m a decent shot at a variety of disciplines & platforms but could be much better with practice. That time commitment is just not in the cards at this time. My goal these days is to keep my skills up and hopefully improve a bit each time I make it out.

When I play guitar, I'm playing actual music whether I'm practicing or performing.
When I ride my bike, I'm actually going places and getting fitter. Riding up to the 7,000 ft elevation highest point in our local mountains and descending at 50 mph.
When I shoot a gun at a target range I'm pretending I'm shooting either at people of animals, because bullets weren't made for paper targets. And I hope to never use a gun for the real life application of shooting another human being. I would avoid it at all costs. I would tell a burglar I have a gun pointed at them in hopes that they would run out of the house first. And in California I don't have any need to hunt, buy all my food from the grocery store. I will hunt when visiting relatives in Michigan, but that will probably be bow hunting (long bow). So target shooting, to me, is just a fantasy game and a skill with no practical purpose. If I got good at it, or even something like practical pistol competitions (which I used to do pretty well in) there's no benefit to my life. Unless of course I'm looking forward to the chance to kill another person, which I'm not. I love skeet shooting, but again at this stage in my life and not living in the wilderness or around hunting areas I'm probably never going to be bird hunting. So another skill and nothing to do with it.
I would get much more benefit out of going to a power tool range and practicing with those. Unfortunately I don't, and my house is the first target for that.

i had a M29 4" in the 90's. you talk about a hand full.......wow!
on the other hand, i had a buddy who had a Thompson Contender in 45-70, 10" bbl.

Yeah, I started looking at 29s but they are getting expensive and as I now have two classic blue S & Ws I thought I would try a SS instead, and I understand these later guns had an “endurance “ package which makes them a little more robust shooting hotter magnum loads.
Lol. I have a TC contender with a 14 inch 45-70 bbl. It is painful to shoot and gave me ‘flinch’ that took a while to shake. It is a great gun for handgun deer season, but it was never fun to shoot
