I was just trying to demonstrate a general principle: many people, if left to their own devices, will support their own short-sighted interests. Everything's related and nothing happens in a bubble, but many can't or won't see that.

"I'm not paying for federal highways! I use surface streets."
Yes, but the big-ass trucks that bring big-ass deals to your big-ass WalMart use those roads.

"I'm not paying for public schools! I don't have any kids."
Yes, but the cop who pulls you over or the jury of your peers might be the product of that public school system. You want to short-sheet the learning of the general populace? Go right ahead.

It's all related. Sometimes I can't fit my point into a smart-ass one liner, I guess.

...I wholly support space exploration, but I dont know what to think about this...On the one hand, you have the whole Manifest Destiny, America should be exploring space, but you also have a country which is on the ropes, more and more people are loosing jobs, salaries are dropping, but living costs are rising, because of some stupid party system, no one can even be on the same page without worrying how left or right the blue or red page is...I think right now, space exploration isnt the most important thing...

...there are much more important issues right now than sending people to the moon...but the problem is that going to the moon is a damn important issue...space exploration will happen in the future, taking a year or two off from working towards that does not negate the goal, only impedes it...not focusing on the severity of the issues at hand very well could negate that goal of modern Manifest Destiny...how can we spread the American dream, if that dream is supported by a damaged nation?...

...You have a ten story building, you want to add more floors, but the foundation is cracked...do you build your additions, hoping the whole time that the foundation can support it, or do you repair your foundation, to ensure the additions never falter?...

You mean if we hadn't embraced Enlightenment-era notions enshrining "reason" a "progress" as little gods unto themselves we wouldn't have developed technocratic societies fueled by a petrol/plastic-focused consumer economy that destroys our planet or "nookaler" weapons for blowing up all the people who don't die of thirst and pollution? So we wouldn't need a space program for abandoning our dirty Earth? Cosmic.

Eventually our species will have to learn to adapt and co-exist with the environments in which we live, not tear it all down to bare earth and build it up to suit our whim.

I can understand that. I just wish that the people who decide what the money actually gets used for did a better job. I also wish that the memebers of the two major political parties in this country actually worked together for the common good of the country and not against each other for their own narrow view of the world.

I read some stuff about what happened to teepee dwellers as a result of manifest destiny and the American dream. It wasn't pretty.
