Any Santana fans...fans of the old band and music that is?

I was wondering if any such fans were aware of the reunion tour...of sorts.

It's mostly Carlos' recent band with Journey opening so Neal Schon will be playing with both bands and Greg Rolie will be playing with Santana.

For me Greg is the real score. I wish he'd play with Journey too. I would assume it would have to happen at some point during the tour.

My desire to attend is high, while my ability is likely low.

The 70's Santana and Journey bands were excellent to see live. My dad took me to see them when they toured together in 1977, one of my first big arena concerts. Robert Fleischman was still Journey's lead singer.

I'm not the biggest Neal Schon fan, and I'll leave it at that.

Mike Schrieve kinda made that Santana. One of the most underrated rock drummers worth mentioning.

I'd say he was one of the many elements that made the whole so amazing, but he alone didn't make the band for me...sum of the parts and such. Cindy Blackman is a killer drummer, so despite how much I'd prefer Schrieve were a part of the tour I don't think his absence is a deal breaker. Gregg is the piece that they never quite replaced although I enjoyed Ligertwood's vocal. Rolie was literally the voice of the band and just killed it...I also loved his keyboard playing.

I can respect that. Neal grabbed me more when I was younger, but I've grown away from really enjoying what he does. There are still some nice melodic solos on old Journey tunes though. He also vacillates between seeming rather cool/down to earth and being a douche. Whenever the latter comes into play with any frequency I can't help but think it's the rule and not the exception.

Apparently there's a new album coming out in April with Carlos, Neal, Michael Schrieve, Michael Carabello, and Gregg Rolie...that's something I'm definitely looking forward to hearing. Maybe they can bring the fire back to Carlos' playing. Too band David passed away.

I saw Santana once, in 1988. They were "opening" for the Grateful Dead at the Tacoma Dome. It seemed to me that Santana wiped the floor with the Dead. I wouldn't drive a long way out of my way to go see them now. But I still would enjoy seeing them. Never been a Neal Schon guy.

If they're near me, I would really like to see that show. I've been a Santana fan since the 70's.

I'm curious to hear how this turns out. I've followed Schrieve's career for years after Santana: his work with Stomu Yamash'ta's Go project, his playing with Automatic Man, Hagar Schon Aaronson Schrieve, Novo Combo, and then more recently that record he did with Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg and now his work with his newest band, Spellbinder. I know he's going to be part of the Santana IV record but yeah, I know Santana's wife is a great drummer in her own right but I like Mike Schrieve's rhythmic feel and energy.

Never been a fan. I liked a tune here and there but the local radio stations over played the music just like the Stones, Zepplin, etc.

I was very happy when I discovered that Black Magic Woman is a Peter Green tune originally done by Fleetwood Mac. I was so burned out on the Santana version.

No doubt the first three Santana albums were amazing but I am so burned out on his playing that I can't get excited about it...

And then there's this...

Variation On The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression

i really liked Santana of the late 60's and thru the early/mid 70's, but the stuff he's been doing with matchbox 20 and the rest is just not carlos. he's playing the same 5 licks on everything, and they're not even inspired or anything.
(Clapton has been doing the same thing for the last maybe 10 years. it's sad.)

Clapton sounded great on the Cream reunion shows and I heard he really rose the occasion of playing between Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall, Jr.

Sadly Carlos hasn't had the same drive in recent years, although his shape Shifter album was better than anything he's released in quite some time. My hope is that playing with old band and having Neal there might inspire him to dig deeper (no put intended).

I'll say this. If you're on an iffy date and needing some good mood music, classic Journey can turn it around. It's been a while, but I dare anyone to refute this.

I learned this a bit too late for a few outings.

I really liked Schrieve as his drummer and would love to see them perform together. Oh well. I'm probably in the minority, but I always dug Carlos' early 70's stuff the best. I think Caravanserai is his best work. That was right before Schon and Rollie left.

I dunno. I left Carlos after Moonflower which was amazing. I just forgot about him.

Love classic Santana, especially the live recordings.

No local concerts though. I'd have to go to Vegas or something.
