NYC Suggestions

Headed into NYC tomorrow and my wife is cutting me loose for the day to go shopping w/ her friend that lives there. So I am on my own - outside of the guitar shop section (Rudys, Sam Ash, GC, etc) is there any other cool music related "things to see" in NYC? Or should I hit the museums?
 
Music shops, pawn shops anything that may be cool to see and related to music - preferably guitars :)

i'm not sure about pawn shops around here. guitar stores i got you covered:

Rudy's (don't forget the amp room around the corner)
30th St Guitars
Ludlow Guitars
Matt Umanov

Sam Ash on 48th and GC on 14th are ok, but have the same things every other GC and Ash have.

record stores around the city are dwindling. there's some smaller shops still left on St. Marks, but I like Sounds the best. Flamencology recommended another store further downtown, but i can't remember the name.

if you're only in for the day, i'm guessing Williamsburg is out of the question. but if you get out there, Acadamy Records is excellent, as is Main Drag Music (another guitar store).

as for shows to see, check out TimeOut New York's website and go find something to go to.

i will be in the Penn Station area tomorrow between about 4:30 and 6pm. i'm coming back from guitar lessons and waiting for band practice to start. i'll likely spend some of that time at La Suprema Pizzaria on 8th ave.
 
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is incredible but would take a couple of days to see it all. The National History Museum (Great ocean room) is great also but I like the Met MUCH more. The Met has a really cool history of musical instruments room and being a history geek I LOVE the arms and armor section.

Heidelberg and Ithaka are on 86th (the Museums are on 86th) but across town on the East side of town. Heidelberg is German food and Ithaka is Greek food. Both are great imo. 86th and 2nd I believe.

There really want much there to make it feel like Little Italy. Luckily though we went in 08 during that festival and the homemade cannoli from the vendors on the street was amazing and there were some guys around that were VERY obviously...uhhh...old school Italian, if you will.

But yes, it seems like Little Itally is now all if a block and a half. Still, Lombardi's is so worth going down there. I know you've got other places you like more but that sauce is un-friggin-believable.

its not so much "like more" as it is "more convenient, still taste awesome". i mention La Suprema because its right by Penn Station and is really great. there are other pizzarias in the area that are just ok. their pizza is good to excellent depending on how long its been sitting out. but it'd be a pain for me to get into Penn, haul all the way down to Little Italy, and then go right back there for band practice 90 minutes later.

next time you're here, if you want really weird pizza, i'll take you to Two Boots. they do all kindsa crazy stuff and name their pizzas after celebrities.

The wife and I were talking about going in April with the kids. Drive in, park on Staten Island, take the ferry over, grab a pie at Lombardi's, sightsee for a few hours, take the ferry back and drive home. Yes, we are crazy.

Where is two boots? I dunno if we want weird pizza. A real NYC pie is so awesome and we cant get anything near as good here.

The whale should be seen in person. I't pretty damn cool IMO.
