What is the first big news story you remember from childhood?

I know I was alive for the Reagan assassination attempt, but the Challenger explosion is probably the first major thing I vividly remember.

I remember Challenger really well, as I was a junior in high school. Christa McAuliffe was from the town next to where I went to high school. She talked at my high school twice before that day. I don't remember watching it live, but I remember I was in English lit class and the assistant principal wheeled in a tv to the class and turned it on and we watched the post explosion news coverage.

i remember one of my dad's class mates from med school came to visit us in detroit in (i think) 1959, while my dad was doing his residency at detroit osteopathic hospital.
he was driving a porsche 356......and i just stood there for an hour gazing at that car. never forget it.

Some of us clearly need to focus.

First. Big. News. Story.

Gary Carter's trade from the Montreal Expos was huge. He was the best catcher of his generation. That he was had for a decent 3B with a great name, and a buncha spare parts, was a coup for the Mets. Especially trading within the NL East.

I don't have a problem with interesting historical remembrance, even if it wasn't news.

I made the thread, but I don't set the rules. Feel the history flowing through you.....

Good point. That's probably the biggest story. June 1980. Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father. I was 2 1/2, and I remember seeing Empire in the theater.

I remember driving about an hour in my dad's pickup truck to the theater to see the original Star Wars movie. It was fricken huge at the time. It opened the week before, and I remember being in my treehouse listening to a kid from the farm next door's tape recording of the movie because he went on opening day. He explained the whole movie while we listened to distorted laser blast sounds on cassette.

Everyone is a special snowflake and gets a trophy. Let's change the rules, so everyone's contribution is a winner.

so....while you are reminding us of what the OP was.....what's your big first news story?
mine was being sent home from school because kennedy was assinated......and then watching his funeral on tv.....in BLACK AND WHITE.

I was brought up in a catholic school, so the 81 papal shooting was big.

One of the few times they let us have the TV in the lunchroom.
