What bands did your friends try to turn you on to but didn't take?

Dudeman1967

blah, blah, blah...
It seemed the harder they tried the more I fought it.

A couple of close friends back in high school tried they're best to get me to like the Doors. It never took. Even today.
Not sorry. Just don't like them much. There are bunches of bands I don't like much.

KISS (1976). All my friends, and Junior High kids in general, were into them. My take was that they were a gimmick band.

When KISS got the original members back together for a tour in 1996, I got tickets to see if I missed out on anything. It was silly, campy, and harmless. Definitely, a gimmick band.

+1 on Rush. I liked Pert's drumming but the rest was awful. Horrible vocals, sophomoric lyrics and pretty blah guitars made them a no go for me. Everyone else was smitten though...

Kiss sucked.

Wasn't crazy about Van Halen either.

I had a few mates who thought that since I was into guitars I'd probably appreciate some of their favorite metal bands as well. It didn't really work, with few exceptions. I actively dislike Metallica, but I think "The Call of Ktulu" is a great track. I don't really like Iron Maiden either, but I think Killers is a, yes, killer album, and I like Di'Anno's vocals and out of place punk attitude. I never really got grunge or post-grunge either. Years after their lost efforts I weirdly got into King Diamond/Mercyful Fate. King's vocal style is an acquired taste, I suppose, but I really dig a lot of his stuff.

I can appreciate the showmanship and the whole kiss army thing. The Misfits had a similar thing I liked. To me having some sort of 'gimmick' is the whole point of rock music. It was made to be a spectacle. Kiss got that part right.

I just don't like their songs at all or how their albums sound. A few songs like Detroit Rock City and God of Thunder are okay, but that's about it.

Add me to Rush. They have a few good songs but the vast majority of their oeuvre bores me. It seems like music written to impress 14 year olds who don’t read enough to realize that those lyrics aren’t actually profound.

That notion reminds me of a roommate I had in college. He was too aggressive trying to proselytize bands he liked, and it really had the opposite of the intended effect.

Many of his bands were no brainers and eventually I did get into them, but it was later on. :rainfro:

+1 for Kiss. Gimmick. Scare the parents and the kids will eat it up. No, you need talent too. Also, just a bad guitar tone. What the hell were they playing?

I was never into Metallica but, I really like the Black Album which is weird because their fans hated it, called them sellouts and I'm like yeah, it's not metal but, it's really good music.

I can understand not getting Kiss if you don’t want to see them live. Most of the songs suck and Gene is a terrible bassist. But when they put on the costumes, fired up the monster light rig, and shot off fireballs it was pretty cool. I wouldn’t have paid to see a second time, though.

Bob Marley. I had the car and they needed transportation. We drove to the Music Inn in W Mass. I just did not enjoy it even with a free ticket
