Those of you who speak foreign languages: how did you learn?

Haha yeah I get that a lot. Sometimes in parties me and my GF just say something in dutch to each other very quickly and people tend to find it hilarious :embarrassed: A friend of ours calls it "that language you're making up".

Dutch vocabulary has a lot in common with my language. I find I can pick up on quite a few words, even full sentences here and there.
Suppose that's a major reason why a lot of Dutch people have been moving up here the last few years.

Finnish on the other hand makes absolutely no sense. :embarrassed:
 
At one point I was pretty good at Spanish. I took two years of it in school (and 3 years of German) and lived in Spain for two years. I was better at reading it than speaking it though. I've lost it now. Plus I was raised by a Norwegian step-mother so I had a smattering of Norwegian at one point. I had to figure out what she was saying to me when I got her mad.

I learned French in school, K-12, immersion. My wife is a native Francophone, and having lived with her and her siblings, it's become second-nature. French has become the primary language in our household (semi-consciously) since we've lived in Anglo communities.

I know a fair bit of Gaelic from my Irish grandparents. But I really only get to speak it is if I'm speaking to my grandfather on the phone, or if I'm visiting Ireland. There are some Irish-speakers in Cape Breton, but it's bastardized, and I fucking hate Cape Breton, have no incentive to even drive through the place, etc. I listen to a fair bit of the music, though.

I learned a fair bit of Latin and Ancient Greek in school, but there's no real need for me to use it ever, unless it really specific situations (Renaissance music, Greek drama, etc.)

I'd like to learn German. I love Berlin.

You know how tompetty is about whatever band he's into right now? Well, CB is like that about Scottishness and (to a slightly lesser degree) Irishness 365 days a year. And many people act like they invented UK culture, even though what they practice is a Disneyland version.

I know English because I grew up with it...in America...where I was born and live.
Took 4 years of French in high school and can't remember a damn thing except "Do you speak french?" And "my name is"
Oh and "you sleep with my dog"
The wife and I planned to learn Portuguese together back before we had kids but never did. We had this dream of going to Disney World and making fun of everyone in a language they couldn't understand just like we feel they're doing to us most of the time we go there.
I mean none of this as offensive to anyone. Reading it back it seems it could be taken that way.

I took Spanish and French in school, but I only remember a few phrases. I can speak a bit of German, a bit of Dutch, and a good amount of West Frisian...all of which I picked up from my parents.
 
I spoke a mix of English. Montenegrin and Ukrainian at home thanks to my parents. Though I barely can speak any of it anymore.
Would love to learn Spanish or mandarin.

i have been teaching myself Spanish and am learning teh local Mexicans around here speak a very bastardized version of Spanish
