This is a thread we should have - ask your embarrassing pedal questions here

I see, Zen drive is based on the tube screamer circuit but is lower drive, thicker sounding with a tone and a pre drive mid presence control. Sounds very amp like on its own and I used it as a fender like always on preamp in front of my kustom with great results for a while. I like a good DOD 250, so thanks for the info.

I really wouldn't consider the Zen Drive similar to a Tube Screamer as the Zen uses FET transistors and asymetrical clipping where as Tube Screamer just use diode clipping.

Someone might argue that the configuration is similar but it is characteristically different. FET's are the closest thing to emulating a tube in the solid state world and diodes are just there to clip the peaks of the AC waveform.

The Timmy however is closest to Tubescreamer of the 3 pedals mentioned. Really just a modded Tubescreamer.

Meanwhile the DOD 250 is very similar to an MXR Distortion with a few component changes.

FWIW - Use what sounds good to you. All of the circuits are built off of variations of a basic op amp design.

The Timmy sounds like a modded DOD 250. It definitely doesn't sound like a tubescreamer.

The 250 and the D+ are the same circuit. The 250 uses silicon transistors and the D+ is germanium.

Which brings up the question, would you prefer FET or Germanium for a rat clone? I'm asking for a friend.

Thanks, I was just going with what I had heard somewhere else. Explains why they never sounded anywhere near the same to me.

Sound vs does not define the pedal. In regards to the 250 vs. D+, exactly but the circuit is essentially the same.

FWIW, a Zen Drive does not sound like a Tube Screamer.
