19 confirmed kills in a Wildcat. None more badass.

Those are amazing pics.

My wife's grandfather was in the marines in WWII and has a ton of old slide film pictures he took during the war. He has a ton of war pics from Saipan, Tarawa, and a bunch of other islands from the invasions. His pictures are pretty awe inspiring, especially when you are talking to the nice old guy who was actually there and saw all that insanity. The are not as good as the pro shots in the article above, but they certainly paint an incredible story.

He ran telephone lines from bases to forward operating units and also did radio communications. He said that job probably saved his life, as he spent a lot of time on front lines, but he was never the first person to go there or in the first wave of attacks.

While I know that those kills are airframe kills and not pilot kills, I'd bet that plane was flown by Joe Foss, who had 26 kills in the Wildcat on Guadalcanal.

Yeah, badass, considering that the Wildcat was slower, less maneuverable, and a slower climb rate than the Zero in which they were fighting on Guadalcanal.

Fuckin major anti- air rounds being fired there.
I was stationed on Adak. ( the pic with all the pin up girls )
There were lots of old fortifications still there from the war. Pretty cool hanging out in them.

I have a distant uncle who is still somewhere in the USS Arizona. Sometimes it just hits me in a different way, like today.
Sure, I never knew him, but I wonder what could have been. War sucks.

There is a WWII vet that plays slots eery weekend in the casino I work at.
I think I'll comp him dinner tomorrow.
Just to say thanks.
There are not many vets of that war left.
