So what do we think of the massive Equifax data breach

On a somewhat related note, a co-worker of mine has been getting harassed big-time by a phone scammer. From what I overheard from him, the scammer has been calling where we work something like every minute, tying up the outside phone lines of the company we work for. They found his home phone# too and do the same thing.

My co-worker is afraid of getting fired, but how can you get fired for something you have no control over (Union shop)? And how do you stop a scammer like that from calling? I heard snippets of a couple of the calls, the guy sounds Indian. It's not like the FBI can (or would) send a team to India to stop a harassing phone call, but just imagine if your business was getting a call every minute, demanding $$$ for them to stop calling.

yeah but they might sell yer identity on the underground superhighway and some human trafficker might assume he's you then one night the pokeyman busts through your skylight and haul you away....to the pockey . Why ? All because Equifax let loose your information....getting a card issued is the least of yer worries
Meh. Not worried. I have alibis

My theory: North Korean hack of Equifax. It's the financial equivalent of a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile.

Well played, fat little man, well played. :zoinks:

@DdBob....have you had any issues when you have tried to apply for credit somewhere? For example. Let's say you go to the store to buy a tv and want to apply for the store's credit card. When they run your credit have you had an issue due to the credit monitoring blocking the attempt at viewing your credit?
I'm thinking that because most of the time for me, in that situation pretty much instantly I'll get the approval etc. but I'm wondering if, because of the monitoring it may cause a delay or other type problems with instant approval...
What overall issues have you faced in this type situation, if any?

I have not so far because I have two cc's already (two of the major ones and that is 1 too many to be honest) and no desire for any more credit. Job or living situation would be the only thing for me. I have not even looked into the process of temporarily lifting the freeze but it doesn't seem to bad.
Example of process is ....let's say you are going to apply for jobs. You can either pul a full temporary lift on your credit /bacground check or you can specify which companies and people can access it. The second seems the way to go.

*edit* I do already have passwords and whatnot set up with the three agencies to access my freeze when need be but i haven't checked into them yet

Before I had the freeze I had the "credit alert" which was placed on my info telling issuers they should take extra steps to verify applicants....that doesn't work. There was still applications for a visa and wal-mart and they both came in the same week. The freeze stopped 100 percent of that.

Good to know that you can set up passwords to lift the freeze. My big worry is that it would be a big process for me personally to work around that. Thanks for the info.

What I find is strange is that their systems are flawed and when something happens to a consumer, the banks or credit companies expect the consumer to deal with the issue. It is their issue not the consumer. In my experience if you hold them responsible they will make things right. They whine a little and then they get to work.

I've had some delays because I've got an alert set on my credit file.
It's not too bad though. Here, the entity running the check just has to get your permission and be able to verify your identity. Which is easy to do if you're sitting in front of them and have picture i.d.
The only time it's really a problem is if YOU forget to mention the alert and they try to put the application through and the alert comes back a while later. Mention it up front and they include the right info on the application and it works fine.

There was an interview with the CEO yesterday on the radio and he claimed that those execs had no knowledge of the breech........with out some direct evidence to the contrary, getting insider trading charges to stick isn't easy.

We checked the https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/ site last night and while my info wasn't part of the breech, my wife's was.

Thanks....I'm going to sit down this afternoon when I get a minute and enroll. Even a little delay is well worth the peace of mind. Especially in the wake of this debacle.
My wife went on the Equifax website yesterday. You enter the last 6 of your SSN and they can tell you if you likely have been compromised....I don't need to tell you that, of course we both are in the compromised group.

Equifax responded by sending consumers to a website where, by signing up for credit monitoring services, they could waive their legal rights to ever take Equifax to court, for any problem.

This is bullshit. They failed to protect consumers in the first place. This is on them. To require waiving legal rights for any related problem is typical corporate lack of accountability.

Originally, yes

That has been rescinded due to the public backlash

My wife works in the corporate office of a major bank. She had told me all about the website and how they want you to waive your right to sue them....fuck that.
I just now finished signing u and registering for a monitoring service. One that I picked and I didn't waive my right to sue because as soon as that class action suit starts....I'm all in.
They failed every single person that was compromised.....time to pay up.
