So what do we think of the massive Equifax data breach

 This is ridiculous  san, last name, drivers license etc....Major breach!

Luckily (i guess) for me i had an issue of identity theft this past fall and long story short is I now have a permanent credit freeze with all three companies until i decide otherwise. It will be a hassle when applying for a new job or, apartment, loan, etc, etc because i will need to go through a process to temprarily lift them but with the freeze nobody can apply for credit. There is a lesser credit alert you can do but it's pretty much useless....it doesn't stop people from applying for credit in your name. fwiw I had enrolled with a company called ID watchdog shortly after this happened and without them my process woulda sucked major ass and time, probably money as well. I now pay them 14 dollars a month but well worth it. To sum it up I gave them power of attorney and in three days they had everything cleared up, false credit applications removed, free lifetime credit freeze, etc...well worth the money....

So the Equifax data breach apparently has affected 143 million americans...your info is very well compromised now. As a back story I honestly think where mine happed was through online outdoors retailer Alt Rec (kinda like an amazon of REI) , they had a data breach about three years prior and they gave me 1 year free credit monitoring. My point is if your info is now breached you might not have problems for a few years down the road. I'm sure these hacker assholes sit on the info for some time, or the companies they sell it too. You might wanna look into a full on identity monitoring service like id watchdog, etc..(just do your research). Apparently this is the third breach of Equifax since 2015...wtf

also Gizmodo says don't sign up for Equifaxs free id monitoring as it might waive your rights to a class action lawsuit down the road....Ima gonna read up more on this

Meh. Just another Friday.

And that's the problem. We have become so accustomed to these data breaches that this is just another one. I have all of the safeguards on my credit that I'm supposed to have. But it doesn't seem to be enough.

yeah , this one though pretty much has you ss number, address, place of work, name, probably mothers maiden name even medical info, etc. they could potentialy fuck someones whole life up, not just disrupt it

I had just read about how this company called Borrowly (or borrowify or whatever other stupid name online companies come up with) had just partnered with Equifax to improve access to credit scores for Canadians. It is ugly.

I think this exactly why folks should stop requiring a social security number for mundane shit. Whenever I'm filling out a form with that field, I leave it blank. Most times it goes right through.

Credit card breaches are not a big deal at all. Mine's been hacked a half dozen times at least. The CC companies have gotten really good at detecting those, shutting them down, letting you know and issuing a new card pronto.

This breach opens the door for a whole 'nuther level of identity theft. If nothing else, it should raise awareness to the problem and with 160+ million folks affected, credit scores are going to lose serious credibility.

yeah but they might sell yer identity on the underground superhighway and some human trafficker might assume he's you then one night the pokeyman busts through your skylight and haul you away....to the pockey . Why ? All because Equifax let loose your information....getting a card issued is the least of yer worries

What do you all think about Life Lock or some such thing for protection?

I spent a lot of time looking last fall and Lifelock had/has some questionable practices, forgot what they were exactly but just do some comparisons like google up "lifelock vs....", etc and come to your own conclusions. I will recommend Id Watchdog the one I have http://www.idwatchdog.com ...two , well three things...1 they have the best monthly subscription price. 1. They are the only ones that will cover you on problems from before you enrolled wityh them and 3. i can testify to their effectiveness. They assigned a lawyer to me and all the work was done on their side. They responded to all my questions and returned any correspondence the same day.

We just got a $9.09 bill from a card that's been dormant since 2014 (we did a no interest balance xfer bounce with it and never used it again). It was used in CA, we're in VT. Called the cc co and they said there was a $50 charge right after that got denied. They took care of the $9.09 charge... and I closed the card.
