Clive Davis, the god of A&R, has died at 94. The guy signed Janis Joplin and Alicia Keys and a metric shit tonne of artists in between. That’s a hell of a career.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he seemed universally loved by the artists he was involved with. And in the his position that must be pretty unique.
 
I think you’re probably correct. Not many big label A&R people ever realize that you have a better career if people want to work with you.

Except Kelly Clarkson. It was really shitty of him to refuse to support her when she wanted to write her own songs. That pretty much derailed her career and now she’s a talk show host. I know the man had the golden ear and that album didn't have big commercial potential but he could have done something with it and followed up with a bunch of Max Martin songs a year later.
