Said goodbye to Little Bean today. It was time. She was diagnosis with possible (because we didn't do the biopsy to be sure) lymphoma and lost 6 out of 36 lbs in 2 months. She was panting a lot was starting to struggle to walk and was having diarrhea almost daily. But she was still a good girl to the end (almost no accidents in the house, still ate and even occasionally barked at other dogs). She had a rough start to life and we are able to give her a good home for the last 14+ years. And at something between 16-17 years old she had a good life I think (she was rescued out of Taiwan so there is no way to know her exact age. Neither of these pictures are recent the first is after we got her in 2012 the second its a few years later.
My wife is very sad as she was very attached to this baby girl. And I'm sad for both of them. But it was the right thing to do at the right time and I don't regret it. Below the pictures is her rescue story from her rescuer in Taiwan. I post it if anyone is interested and also to have another place where this information is saved as the rescue organization doesn't exist anymore AFAIK.
Little Beans Rescue Story:
In a shelter, there are always too many heart-breaking storiesin the moms & babies section*; few, if any, of them would have ahappy ending for the reason being simple as that hardly anybody couldafford to rescue the whole pack, no matter how kind that person is.
On this day Nov 20th, I saw this pregnant girl in this moms &babies section, with ticks over the body, a unknown scar and a parthairless on the back, blood in her urine, and taenia in herexcrement, lying prone in the cage listlessly and coughing once in awhile. I stepped forward, she squeezed her nose among the railings,seemingly in that way she could get to know me, to be near me, and tobreathe the free world outside. She trembled to sit up; I found herleft hind leg limping. That leg, thinner than the other three, musthave been injured for quite some time and should hardly be healednow. I unlocked the cage to cuddle her; I felt that the picturestarted painting in my mind that in the next few days she strugglesto deliver in this tense environment but then in no time be forced toleave this world together with the newborns.
In such a public shelter which is short of resources andeuthanize almost 200 dogs every week, its difficult enough to findhomes for healthy and adorable dogs, not to mention a package likethis girl. However, looking at the odd bold portion of her back, hercrippled leg, and her getting friendly to me like she had no reasonsnot to trust anybody, my head spun wondering what kind of woeful pastdid she have ever been fooled with, or even been abused? Even if shewas hurt accidentally simply while straying on the street, why noneof them ruins her genuine faith in human beings?!
I'd never be able to reverse any miserable history, but I just couldnt lay back seeing whats gonna happen soon, which all is making the last journey of her life a helpless and uncontrollable turmoil,and a deplorable farce! I just couldnt! Girl, no matter what people once owed you care, affection, or even minimum respect for your living right that deserves your submission and gentleness, pleaselets make up for them from now on. Starting from today, youre mine.You have to hang in there, Ill find you the best cure, some day, Ill find you the best sweet home!
In this area, there are mommy-to-bes that get abandoned bytheir owners at the last minute before they deliver; there are also doggies that get sent in to the shelter by their owners prior to their giving birth, then get taken back right after the delivery,leaving the new mommies overwhelming agony and dilemma that the onone hand, being happy to see owners bringing them home, on the otherhand, being devastated for seeing babies being cast aside in the cagestill. Moreover, there are babies being coupled with new moms who getcaught into the shelter without having their own kids aside for thehope that those stranger moms will somehow help nursing thosestranger babies in the last few days of their lives; of course, thereare always mommies that bark and seem to be fierce on people simplyfor protecting their babies never forget to turn round to lick andsoothe their babies; many of those mommies in a few days transform tograceful cuteys that wag tails to everybody hoping somebody wouldecho their amicability to rescue them and their babies out. Thechance is slim that the moms and puppies could get out of the kenneluntil the due day that they get brought to the euthanasia room: themom will be put down first; moms and babies will be loaded into thesame plastic bag for cremation, hopefully theyll be angels togetherstill in another world.
Per government law, animals will be euthanatized after 12 daysof stay in shelters.
Little Bean has little interest in cats. She would watchthem but seldom approaches them. She adjusts to a new environmentfairly well and doesnt have food aggression.
Little Bean is friendly to adults and children. Shewould approach them when she knows they wont harm her and when shegets invited over. She doesnt just jump on people. She is friendly tostrangers as well by wagging her tail and would get closer when sheknows they are friendly.
Little Bean needs a little time before she makes friends withother dogs. She would keep a distance with other dogs at first untilthey come sniff her with friendly attitude. If any dogs that shemeets for the first time continue barking at her or run towards heror even quickly come to sniff her, Little Bean would get nervous andstep back. She gets along with other dogs as long as those dogs donot act aggressive immediately when they firstly meet.

@nuke_diver Thank you for giving Little Bean a loving home and making such an important difference. Having lived similar experiences with tens of adoptions, saying goodbye never gets easier. (We lost 4 in the last 10 months)

@Tig I don't know how you do it Doug. The 2 dogs we have had (both for 14+years, first one is still my picture here) were so hard to say goodbye to. I went for a long ride today thinking it would be cathartic, it was not. I spent the entire 3 hour ride thinking about Little Bean. I realized that since I got back into cycling 13 years ago she was always waiting for me to come home after my rides, until today

Continuing with the sad trend, I euthanized Bailey, Thursday last week. She was 15 years and 9 months old.
She had suffered a severe heart murmur for more than 4 years. She also had thyroid disease, but could not tolerate the medicine. She was very feeble and had trouble walking for the last year. She showed signs of cognitive decline. She started losing her sense of smell which made it difficult to get her to eat. I’d microwave her food which sometimes helped. Lots of accidents and diarrhea for the past year.
I took her for a rabies shot and the vet talked me out of it. The vet heard prominent crackling in one of her lungs, so I made the decision to call it before she started having difficulty breathing.
My son was about 7 years old when we got Bailey. He’s 22 now. He came with me for her end of life procedure. He cried a lot. It was his first experience saying goodbye to a dog.
Bailey was so rambunctious and mischievous as a young dog. She was diminished and detached this last year. There was intense sibling rivalry between her and her biological sister, Chloe. But, she loved her adopted sister, Daisy. When we got Daisy as a puppy, Bailey treated her like a daughter.

We took some time off from pets out of respect. Now I laugh a dozen times a day and get a true visceral warmth when I play with or pet these animals. They are better for me than I am for them.
My new puppy and kitten continue to entertain and slightly destroy (was planning to replace BR carpet next year. Nope, Jerry is a nervous fellow. Became a carpet muncher,so to speak. New hardwoods on the way. Fuuuuudge!)
They are great friends when no one is looking. Kramer is so considerate with his claws. The puppy still thinks he has a chance to lead the pack.

Well I'm impressed. We bought food and meds for Little Bean from Chewy as it was convenient to have the autoship option especially for her thyroid tabs that she needed 2x a day. Obviously my wife went and cancelled all those and when cancelling (online not calling them directly) it asked what was the reason and one option was pet was deceased. So she selected that. Yesterday we got a delivery of a bouquet of flowers from Chewy with a condolences card. For a large company that was, to me, a very nice gesture and quite unexpected. I get that it's a good business practice but I wouldn't have expected it regardless.

Those Great Lakes beers are very seldom seen way down here in Florida. There's an ABC Liquors directly adjacent to one of the big hospitals here in town, and after visiting a friend in hospital I swung by the ABC to see if they had anything interesting, was very surprised to find it there.
