New Jason Isbell track!!!!

UNINSPIRED.

DUMPING.

Cardinal narrative sin of telling without showing. Perspective of the song is smug liberalism (WHA?! There can't be more of them than us...you all agree with me, right?!) wrapped in faux-sy populist fist pumping. Doesn't paint me a picture or get me on its side or give me a glimpse of someone else's experience. It's just whining dressed up in motivational poster cliches.

Jason is ill equipped to write this type of song. He's trying to be Steve Earle for kids and he's just Toby Keith for NPR listeners.

I can tolerate ambivalent narrators. But he has an uncanny tendency to be indifferent and preachy at the same time.

I'm not gonna talk about this...

Three minutes of vague bullshit about that very subject. And now he's dipped in preachy recovery stink.

I tend to like a lot of his out put. Lyrically, this one doesn't do it for me.

If you're gonna write a protest song, have the balls to write a protest song. Don't hide behind a weak relationship metaphor.
