Ain't it crazy?
New Broken Neck Guitar Day!

I had been gassing for a 335 clone for a while. Then GergS' Epiphone Dot came up for sale in the Spam forum. $200! Sweet deal so I pulled the trigger. GergS is a very nice guy and our communication throughout the purchase and shipping was very cool. Thanks Greg!

I arranged to pick up the guitar at the UPS center near my work. I pick it up after work and head over to Premier Music for my James Brown/Funk Performance Class with Mark.
In the parking lot I open the box and pull out my new guitar. I am very excited. It's beautiful. Minty condition. Absurd deal. A fellow student is in the parking lot and I show him the guitar. He has a similar Epiphone, a Casino I think.

We decide to go inside. I put the guitar in the gig bag and forget to zip it up. I pick up the bag and the guitar falls to the asphalt, breaking the neck from the nut down to just behind the fifth fret. FUCK.:facepalm::facepalm:

The next day, I take it to The Guitar Shoppe in Laguna Beach. They tell me they can glue it, but the repair will very evident. They'll sand it smooth but it won't be pretty. 3 weeks pass. Guitar Shoppe calls. "Your guitar is ready. It was pretty ugly, so sprayed some lacquer on it."

I pick it up and it's beautiful! Way beyond my expectations. :santareindeer: You can barely tell there was ever a break. $140. You seasoned pros would detect it but at least I don't have battle scars glaring at me as I play!

Now this is my third electric. I have two others that are also for the budget minded (77 Ibanez Les Paul and a MIM Strat) and they both have issues with the pups/electronics. They are playable but someday soon I will replace the pups on those and upgrade the electronics. The Epiphone blows them away! It sounds full and has balls!!! I can't believe it sounds this good! I hear how people replace the pups on these things but man, I know now the other guitars need serious attention first.

Oh man, i have never busted a guitar, but that must be a horrible feeling.

Glad its back on its feet. :thu:

Thanks. (And thanks to everyone else.) It WAS a horrible feeling. I was in class and couldn't get that sinking feeling out of my head.
The repair guy said he's broken a few necks and that everyone does someday. (I imagine that applies Gibson and Epiphone owners more, though. Please no offense intended. I just assume they more fragile.)

But I am ecstatic now. I ended up spending almost the cost of a new one. But I have a story to tell.

Wow, they did a good job on the repair. When I got the email about you dropping it I felt so bad for you. I'm glad they fixed it up nice for you and glad you like the guitar. With my 335, Robin and now a Hamer it was just going to sit in the case anyway so I'm happy somone will give it a good home.

Oh, one thing...keep an eye on the input jack those. The nut likes to work loose so just check it every once and a while. I had a Sheraton one time that did the same thing and the next thing I knew the input jack went into the body and I had a hell of a time fishing it back through the hole. Some people put a lock washer on them but I didn't get a chance to try it.

Man, that has to really ruin your day.

It does look like an excellent job on the repair though, so other than costing you extra money, I'd say it all worked out pretty well.
