there’s this flaming lips song called psychiatric explorations of the fetus with needles. (great title) it came out in 1995, and i became a flaming lips fan in 1999 or so, so i’ve been hearing it for over 25 years. it’s on one of my favorite albums, so i’ve heard it a thousand times.
but whenever i’d try to play it, or ufc would try to cover it, i could never figure out the timing of the intro. i thought it was just kind of like they were randomly floating around and knew to come in off of some cue or something. but then i was watching some old live version of it, and i immediately realized i had been hearing the intro wrong this whole time.
what i thought was the 1 is not the 1 at all. it’s the and of 4. and two things happened: 1) the timing of the intro makes perfect sense now, and 2) no matter what i do, i cannot hear it the way i used to. like, once i realized how it actually counted, i can’t go back. even though it’s the exact same audio, obviously, it sounds completely different..
