Newsflash! Local kid makes good! Gold medal for Kaitlyn in Snowboard Halfpipe!

Local girl from a Bellevue, Idaho cattle ranch claimed her gold medal today! Way to go Kaitlyn! Bellevue is about 15 miles south of Sun Valley, and about 3 miles south of where I live. Podunk little place where working class people live. So good for them to get the recognition. Tough folks there.

I love how most of the winter olympians are in taylored, fitted fabric.... while most of the snowboarders wear things that look like old quilts put together by grandma.
I like to buy snowboard clothes to ski in. Much more fun, comfy, tough and lots of pockets to hold things Dads and coaches need. In snowsport apparel, snowboarding is to more competitive skiing as mountain biking is to road biking. But there are a lot of freeriding type skiers that dress more like snowboarders.

The baggy coats that make you look like you are wearing a flannel jacket are still popular, though are waning. But oversized with a hood, and baggy pants, is definitely still in.

In fact, I like the whole attitude of snowboarding. takes itself less seriously. Snowboarding is not that huge here in SV with the kids. many switched over to skiing with the wider skis, twin tip skis, etc. But they bring snowboard-like fun attitudes though.

glad to see Kaitlyn's success. maybe it will inspire some new local snowboard kids.

This is too good not to share.

Andy (Kaitlyn's coach mentioned in the article) is a friend/acquaintance of mine, and we have worked together as we both coach kids, for different goals. Pretty darned awesome.

And here is the vid that was shared.

Andy is the first guy in the vid. Mark Oliver, who shot the vid and put it together, used to work for me as part of the Freeride team.

I have a bet with my son on the outcome of the womens half pipe. He's taking torah bright.

how's the hockey?

seriously though, I saw that snowboard deal, it was pretty damn cool

We have a local girl who has scored goals for the US in the Olympic games as well, Hilary Knight, but you know that already, as she scored in the game that Canada prevailed in today. Maybe see a re-match in the finals, eh?

You know whats crap? Those horribly designed covers the athletes have to wear over their gear. It looks like something designed in the 80's and then made even worse.

Russians and fashion. Polar opposites.

I was watching the half-pipe last night and was struck by the camaraderie between the competitors in women's snowboarding that you don't see in other sports. There seemed to be a similar attitude (but a lesser extent) in the men's half-pipe competition, too. Does this stem from the snowboarding culture? (Not being a young snowboarder, I don't have any exposure to it.)

Yeah, I think it is common in that they just seem mostly intent on having a good time. I noticed Shaun White interrupt an interview he was doing to give a "hey buddy" to "iPod" as he was passing by. I have seen a lot of that attitude in some other events as well, notably the womens downhill. Anyone see the tie for gold yesterday. That was epic (and the slovenian is stunning as well)

The same was true of the men's snowboard slope style. There seems to be a bit of jealousy or something revolving around Shaun White in half pipe for some reason. Generally, the snowboard crew around here is tight, and shows a different fun loving "chill" attitude as compared to some skiers (not all) who seem to worry more about being cool or something. I love the hang with with the snowboarders and rip around on a pow day.

And yeah, @335clone I saw that. Very cool. I used to ski for Elan, whose factory is in Slovenia, and it seems uncommon for a Slovenian competitor to not be on Elan, but in this case, Stockli, out of Switzerland. She tied with the Swiss girl who was on French skis. Interesing! They are all good skis, but are known for having a different feel. The big french name is Rossignol, and I have not seen a Dynastar on the podium so much in a long time.

Gotta bump this post and say this vid is really worth watching. SO WATCH IT!! it really gives a little bit of the vibe of the core rider and skier group that lives here in this community. The music chosen, the regular joes and little kids interviewed and the feel is classic Mark Oliver, (AKA Beav, who is a local videographer and editor and who put the little vid together). Andy (the coach you see first thing) has such a big heart and has worked for a long time believing in his sport and his kids with dwindling numbers and funds. He works with skate kids through the parks program in the summer too, and helps to provide a place for kids that don't feel like they fit elsewhere. This result is big for him and all snowboarders (and really all freeriders who value fun in riding). Hoping that this success encourages more kids to come out and ride.
