I have a Vietnamese friend at work with that last name. He says that surname is like Smith is to Western countries, but 10 times as much.

Yep. The entire eastern end of Biloxi was "repopulated" with Vietnamese after the fall of Saigon. At least half of them are Nguyen. According to Wiki, 40% share the surname.

They are some hard-working people, and great fishermen/women. And they usually graduate at the top of their high school classes.

Older Vietnamese people who never knew their birth date use January 1st.
