Is Hollywood done with superhero flicks?

The two most recent offerings, Supergirl and He-man, both bombed at the box office. Marvel's last several releases have not done well either. Are folks tired of the format, or have they just been lousy films? Or maybe a little of both?

I haven't been to see one in a theater since the 2nd Guardians of the Galaxay movie.

I think calling He Man a superhero movie is a bit of a stretch. It’s a retro IP doing fantasy tropes for an audience that doesn’t really make much sense as people old enough to remember He Man as a going concern are pretty old at this point.

Last year’s Superman was a success by a director who has a good track record. This year’s Supergirl was a bit of a mess by all accounts so I’m not sure that’s much of an indicator. Deadpool and Wolverine made a kajillion dollars in 2024. Thunderbolts underperformed, but it was well regarded critically and was a good little movie for that sort thing. And it’s not surprising that “smaller” film with a bunch of self consciously D-list heroes didn’t pack em in. I would assume the Fantastic 4 movie was more of a disappointment.

Spiderman Goes to Hawkins and Avengers v. Oppenheimer’s Bad Guy will likely make a shit ton of money.

I'm done with Hollywood! Until they star Tilly Norwood in Jane Austin's "Rise of the Machines" featuring Buzz Lightyear Hollywood can kiss my Toy Story.

So that'd put you in the "little bit of both" camp. I think that's where I am as well. I enjoyed the Avengers series leading up to and including End Game. I've seen a few since then on flights and at home and none of them were great. I certainly don't feel like I missed out by not seeing them in a theater.

We bought our Doomsday tickets yesterday. I’m not expecting it to be great given that it’s an obvious cash grab built around stunt casting. But it gets our autistic daughter to leave the house so that’s something.

Never been much of a super hero fan, but I did watch and mostly enjoy all the original MCU run 2008-2019

Quality popcorn fodder.

Since then I've only watched a handful. Some ok stuff, but a lot of filler. Just not that interested anymore, but we aren't exactly the target demo haha.

I damn well hope so. They really made way too many, and the quality dropped. And ending every other sentence with a "hilarious" quip was fun for the first few movies, but they clearly didn't get the memo that it became old real quick.

You had me at, “Is Hollywood done?” Not yet, but they sure seem to be headed in that direction. It’s so expensive to make movies in that town. Movies are often being made elsewhere to save money. I don’t see the trend reversing anytime soon.

As for the other question, there may be some Superhero fatigue happening. Maybe, the popular cycle is winding down. Even if audiences do eventually tire of the genre, it will eventually get resurrected at some point.

Personally, I’m a bit burned out on the current tropes being trotted out in SH movies. The more recent financially successful movies have been mediocre for me. My bag of popcorn is half eaten.

Totally agree with this. Although Marvel was much better at doing that than DC was, for whatever reason. However, it did become a bit formulaic after a while and lost its charm.

Hollywood in general does seem to be struggling. Whoever is making the big decisions at the studios, in terms of what films to make, is clearly out of touch. They seem hellbent on including CGI, lots of explosions, and extended chase and/or fight scenes to the point where the story and plotline get lost. The best movies I've seen lately are coming from smaller, independent studios. I caught Young Washington last week. It's quite good and worth a trip to the theater if you're looking for a movie.
