If your time is limited, what would you work on?

Johnny, if you like blues (as per your OP) and want to be able to improvise over blues backing tracks, you only need to learn one scale, the blues scale. Learn that scale backwards, and at the same time, learn your favourite blues solo's by ear as Jeremy suggests. Just start with one note, two notes, a short lick..as your ear develops it'll all get easier. You could argue that if you learn the solo's, you'd don't even need to care about what the scale is..but I think it helps to "see" the framework for the solo in the long run.

Awesome discussion. I'm so busy I dont know what I can pull off at this point but was inspired this concept of "one thing" and thought if I applied it go guitar, maybe I have a chance. I'll break my time up into roughly thirds (I say I have 15 minutes but some days it could be an hour). I think I will start with turning on the drum machine and strumming songs to it to get warmed up. Then I'll put some time in on the blues scale just for some base, and then spend the last third trying to make sounds. I'll stay off the internet for a while and make my brain work and see how it goes.

I honestly dont know if I have any hope but I like to start these discussion in case they can be helpful to someone else too. Thanks for the replies and keep em coming.

I would look for others who like to sing songs and play tunes and just jam with them. Through osmosis, you would pickup chords, tunes and would be doing exactly what you wanted -

If I really think about it, I want to be able to play and sing at the same time. I envision being able to pull out the acoustic and playing around the pool or fire or whatever with friends and family.

If your goals change later, you can adapt to your changed circumstance time being the main factor.

Limited time? Think of songs I can hear in my head, hear the guitar parts in my head, take as long as it takes to play what my mind is hearing, do the same with the vocals, and rock out....

Pick 4 easy songs you want to learn.
Learn one a week.
Play along to the song. This will help you keep time without the stigma of a metronome.
Once you've learned those 4 songs. Pick 4 more.
