I have discovered the joys of Rye Whiskey!

Wow!
I was at our local yuppy market recently, and I asked the booze guy about rye. He pointed me to Michter's US*1 Single Barrel, Straight Rye Whiskey. Holy shit! It is fantastic! It's so clean and smooth and has a lovely spicy, somewhat peppery finish. I've been drinking it on the rocks with just a little water, and it's just fucking lovely. I can't get enough. I shall soon try some others. Recommendations are welcome.

i would NOT recommend Wild Turkey Rye.....i didn't like it. maybe i'm just not a rye guy.

have we had the Buffalo Trace/Eagle Rare/Elijah Craig conversation yet?
they're all bourbons, but they're very nice and only about $24 or so each.

Big Buffalo Trace fan, as well as Maker's 46, Woodford, Knob Creek, etc.
I need to spend a bit more time with this Michter's stuff, but it might be my new go-to hootch.

OK, now we're talking. I'll try those. Although, Bulleit isn't my fave bourbon--I much prefer Maker's 46 and Buffalo Trace. But I'll give their rye a shot.

I do recommend the bar for which most rye's are measured against, Russell's Reserve Rye. A 6 year rye is considered to be about the same maturity of a 10 year bourbon from what I've read.

Over these many years I've gotten fucked up on everything from Crown Royal to cheap ass Muscatel and have discovered that there are equal amounts of joy and sorrow in all of them.

The buzz is the easy part. What you deal with on the back side differs quite a bit between cheap stuff and the good stuff.

I dropped by the super liquor store during lunch and found a bottle of Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Straight Rye. At $47 it ain't cheap, so I hope it lives up the the reputation.

I've been telling people for years that this Seagram's whiskey is some of the best out there in ready supply. Smooth Ambler distillery in West Virginia told me years ago they were getting their bourbon from there, long before that story broke, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it's great whiskey.
