Have a chuckle at my expense

Wandering and wondering

I'm helping my son-in-law put a fence up around their back yard. Since this involves digging many holes, we had 811 flag all the utility lines. After the utilities put their flags out, we started measuring and marking for our fence posts.

A few days later when we were actually ready to start digging, we noticed that two new markings had been added in the middle of the yard with white spray paint. One was a circle with a line through it - pretty much the universal "no" symbol. The other was a rectangle with an X along the long side and a single line on the other side of the X. But, no flags to indicate what utility. The "no" symbol in particular had me worried.

I was pretty worried about what this might be indicating. The markings themselves were outside of the area where we needed to dig, but if they indicated some sort of pipe coming from the house, that pipe would cross the area where fence posts needed to go. I spent the entire day trying to think about what those markings were trying to tell me and decided to call 811 the next day to ask them.

When we stopped for the evening, I was telling my daughter about those symbols and how I didn't want to dig until we found out what they were. She got this "oh shit" look on her face and told me that she and my wife found the can of marking spray paint and put those in the yard so the kids would have a batter's box and a pitchers mound.

Better than finding a 4 ft petroleum pipeline running through the yard.

That happened in my town decades before we moved here.
