i ended up buying the Alesis M1 Active 520 USB monitors, along with a USB hub and music stand light. got them all from Amazon and they came today.

the 520s are a bit boomy out of the box, but sound better than my M-Audio speakers ever did, and supposedly they need about 40 hours of burn in time. so no worries there. setup couldn't have been easier, and Alesis even provided the inter-speaker XLR cable. so initial impressions are good.

now to break out some Varese and burn these fuckers in.

so they just plug into the USB on yer 'puter?
not the sound card?

yes, they just plug into the USB port. i have an Mac. so i plugged it in, changed the output to the speakers in Sound Preferences, and they worked.

Yes, and chances are the D/A converters in the monitors would be better quality than the D/A converters that your laptop soundcard or output would typically have.

But, in my case, I use the UX2 or the POD 500HD as the sound card, so I need the analog connections...
