French Fry taste vs. Texture Matrix...

Yeah, this should be under food... but when I go to that page it's like I'm not logged in and there's no "new thread" button... I'll deal with that later.

Only change I would make on this would be to flip flop Burger King and Rally's fries. I really don't understand how they could put that one so low on flavor... texure, yes, definitely. Burger King fries are the worst of the big chain's.

And Five Guys are my favorite... even over McD's. Yes they're greasy..... yes, you gain wait just looking at them... but Mmmmm........... :helper:

IMO, Rally's/Checker's have the best fries.

My oldest and I were discussing this last night, 5 Guys are awesome.

That chart is way off IMO. My top 3 are 1. Rally's 2. McDonald's 3. KFC Wedges
The key is getting them fresh and hot.
Five Guys fries are bland and nasty. Popeyes would probably be 4th for me. The rest I wouldn't even eat.
Steak and Shake at the top? Are you kidding me? Has this person ever eaten good fries? Those are easily the worst on the planet down there with Five Guys.

Yeah, personally I would put those over about where Wendy's are, but below the texture line. I love the taste of Rally fries, but man they get mushy fast. I totally get that they're not everyone's cuppa because they're different, but they're great.

Sorry monkey... 5 Guys are always fresh, always delish... especially if you have them sprinkle on the cajun seasoning.

best fries = Steak Escapes
worst fries = Rally's
McD's fries are very good but only if super fresh. +5 minutes and they're junk.
YMMV

We have Checker's here and every time I go there, you have to wait on the fries, so they are always fresh and hot. I've never had them go mushy on me because of that.

McDonalds? really? They are way down on the list for me.

All of the Rally's around here are the little drive through buildings, so it's a crap shoot on fry timing.

If they are fresh out of the fryer and salted properly, absolutely.
Of course that's critical with any fry. I'd probably like more of them if they were always piping hot and properly seasoned. Except Five Guys. I just don't like them.
Same with Chic Fil A. I have had them hot and perfectly salted about 3 times and they were great. Otherwise, bland and gross.
I'm not a plain potato fan so that's my hang up with those type of fries. I don't even make them from scratch at home.

Yeah that's how they are here, the double drive thru buildings. I think they must never expect customers here, because the first fry always burns my mouth.

Which is one of the reasons 5 Guys fries are the best IMO.

Every. Single. Order. is fried from scratch and dumped into the cup and bag right before they hand the order to you. Fuck. It doesn't get better than that. If you're standing right there at the counter you can have them go heavy on the salt or cajun seasoning.... then if you're eating in the building they have both katsup and malt vinegar available.

I used to love McDonald's fries, but it seems somewhere along the way, they changed or maybe I just got tired of them. It seems they are always too hard and tasteless.

I haven't eaten fries in over two years (low-carb lifestyle), but I would agree re: Five Guys fries (particularly with the Cajun seasoning.) In-n-Out fries are horrible, unless you specifically order them well-done (another secret menu item).

McDonald's has spent more money on fry research than real estate. That's a fact.
Burger king changed their fries years ago. I specifically remember when it happened. I was at the mall and they were handing out samples of the new fries. They were amazingly good. I am willing to bet they've changed them again since then because they are borderline inedible now.
