For Heaven's sake who, WHO is the best Rock Saxophone?

Lee Diamond Smith played for Little Richard for years although I don't think he played on the earliest records.

Branford Marsalis's work with Sting is excellent. Tom Scott all over the place. Shorter with Joni Mitchell, as well as Brecker. LeRoi Moore with the Dave Matthews Band...like them or not Roi was a great player, one of my favorites actually.

There are tons of great guest appearances, but the amount of full time horn players in the genre is ever shrinking.

King Curtis is up there, and since The Band is the greatest rock band, it stands to reason that Garth Hudson is the greatest sax player.

Clarence Clemons is definitely the king of arena saxophone, though.

Also, as a huge prog fan I'd say Mel Collins deserves a mention as well. Maybe not the absolute best, but has played on some really memorable songs and albums.

Thank you. The sax solos on Brown Sugar and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking? destroy the one on Money. Slaughter. Different ballpark.

Like Billie Holiday absorbing Lester Young’s influence on her vocals, Keith Richard’s guitar and vocal parts often sound sax like. You couldn’t set up the perfect sax solo any better than Brown Sugar.
