I had a hernia right on my I guess lower stomach area when I was in high school and they put in a mesh this would have been in the late 90s and I think everything is fine but last night i was straining at stool and whenever i do that i try to do it carefully but still with ample force to expel a stubborn rock-hard turd that's wider than my forearm, and this morning that hernia feels a little sore, I guess this is actually a question better answered by a medical professional, but do you think it's possible that I may be reawakening that long-dormant hernia by pushing and pushing and pushing on those recalcitrant doo doo depth charges?

I worked with a guy that had a hernia which required surgery and mesh repair. He was still in a lot of pain when he returned to work. Not fun.

I feel fortunate that my bowels move along quite well. I don't have to strain.

Diet plays a part. High protein diets slow down digestion and tend to create bricks. Foods rich in fiber can help. If not nature, psyllium fiber. Metamucil has a lot of unnecessary ingredients. When I eat a balanced diet, I don't need any extra fiber.

Certain medications can lead to constipation. Don't risk blowing out an o-ring. Increase your fiber intake.

Short answer, probably. Last time I went in for pain in that area, they looked at it, poked it, and told me to come back if it gets worse. I'm guessing I had just fatigued the surrounding muscles, because it hasn't been a problem since.

I have a friend who had that mesh repair. The mesh needed to be removed and replaced. It was a real mess, and he no longer has a belly button. Hope your mileage varies...

When I was in for mine at the Shouldice clinic, there was a guy in from Texas to “finally get it done right”
He’d had the mesh done three times and it kept failing. He was also probably 350 lbs or more and not all that tall.

I’ll occasionally feel the repair a bit when I overdo physical activity, but it goes away within the same day.
