Question: crack kills... or does it? you decide.

GreatDane

"up yours, baby."
yessir, kids. acoustic top - crack runs from tail end of neck to top of soundhole. Crack is through the wood, and can be seen/felt from side and bottom.

resident experts: what say you? major structural dealbreaker, or cleat it and forget it?

I wouldn't buy it like that, if that's what you're asking.

That being said, looks like it could be fixed pretty easily.

I don't know what kind of guitar that is, or what the circumstances are surrounding it, so I can't really comment further.

Cheap guitar with a crack, I wouldn't bother.

Expensive guitar, I would REALLY take some money off (if you were purchasing it), and get it fixed by a luthier.

I watched a YouTube video on fixing an even bigger crack.
It was all about getting the humidity back up to snuff in the wood.
The crack went from being able stick a card in it to almost disappearing.
It just closed up on its own.

They glued it of course, but they didn't show that part.

It might have been a StewMac video. I'll see if I can track it down.

the guitar is a recent Gibson Nick Lucas Reissue acoustic. its not a cheap beater, IMO. it arrived today from the seller. i noticed the crack right away (guitar described as mint), snapped these pics and emailed the seller. i'm awaiting his reply.

Get some money refunded, cleat it, and call it a day. The Nick Lucas is a cool guitar, and not very common to boot. If cleating the top is detrimental to its sound, you can always sell it, without too much of loss in your investment IMO.

No offense, but fuck that shit.

I'd want my money back....that is blatant lying to someone right there....mint my ass.

This. It wouldn't bother me much if it was priced accordingly. A cleat will fix that up.

I've seen worse.

Normally it wouldn't be end of the world, rehumidify the guitar and see what happens.

But it looks like the binding cracked. If the binding is cracked then you have a major crack in the top, possibly, even probably, shipping damage.

(it's tough to tell, a lacquer crack over binding can look like broken plastic... but YOURS looks like broken plastic).

fake edit: the more I look at that, looks more like shock damage than expansion/retraction from humidity.

I'd be willing to bet the seller isn't lying that it left perfect. The fact that crack isn't just one straight line to the fretboard has me thinking impact or shock damage.

I heard back from the seller. He "forgot" to mention that "separation" in his ad (but its NOT a crack he writes; just a separation). He is willing to take the return and issue a refund. I told him I'd have it back in the mail to him tomorrow. I don't need to mess around with undisclosed damage.

A most wise decision...

he's asking me if i'll consider a partial refund. I replied that i hadn't considered it until he brought it up and want to know what he has in mind. regardless of his response, I'll probably just stick to the plan and return it.

$100 partial refund and "it's not shut up money just so you know"...

I told him I appreciated the offer, and that I'd have the guitar boxed and in the mail to him tomorrow.

Painted rosette = very cheaply made guitar. And, he's right, that is a separation in the top where the soundboard halves are (partially, in this guitar) glued together. You usually get what you pay for, though.
