I really don't mind people swinging an appendage, and I think it's easy to filter 12-year-old know-nothings posing as smart people.
As far as the Epiphone mention, let's look at this. I think that an Epiphone could well be a perfect guitar for a beginner. But they might also prefer a Strat. Or be into shred, in which case they might want to find the flattest radius, etc. In other words, when someone shows up and says "what's a good guitar for me, a beginner?" The 'right' answer is "Well, what do you want to play?" Not "get an Epiphone!"
I also had a vague sense that when you have a certain volume of users, law of averages begins to weed out the bullshit. And this has been true on several of the forums I like and visit regularly. However, Reddit's guitar forum (and now, HC's) are just really emphatically dumb. Just seriously unintelligent. Note: I'm not saying 'they're not my kind of people' (for that would certainly be TGP), nor am I saying "I'm smarter than everyone there" (for that would be everywhere in the universe). I'm saying "heckfire, they sure do bring the dumb 'round there."
Which is weird, because an awful lot of Reddit has a pretty high level of discourse (not all, but quite a bit). Just surprised. As for HC .... probably the less I say, the better. Kind of a shame; there was a time that place was good.
Anyhow, in the spirit of the season, thanks to Mark and to all of you for building such a terrific online community.
