I must be missing something. A police car -- that should be expected to sometimes be driven fast and hard -- catches fire and the cop is at fault?

Not saying the whole thing was necessarily police manual perfect. I wouldn't know what police manual perfect is.

What gets me is he backed away from the first fire he started and instead of getting off that dry grass, stopped over more grass. I’m guessing the cat was red hot.

Exhaust systems, especially the catalytic converter, get extremely hot. He should have gotten on the PA and told the driver to move to the right side of the road, as well as to a shoulder. Not everyone possesses situational awareness, especially cops with tunnel vision.

Will add that there was no apparent reason to go 141 mph. A surprisingly high number of people are killed each year in collisions with police cars going at high speeds.
