Anyone use a straight cut razor?

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
For a bald guy I need to shave my head every couple of days  plus my stubble.

I end up spending a fortune on blades and recently I've been getting the odd really bad ingrown hair on my neck so considering getting a cut throat set instead.

Pros, cons, things or brands to look out for?

They can be... delicious!

Straight razor on your noggin? Nope...that’s gonna be a serious bloodletting.
DE Safety razor? Sure, that’ll work fine with a little bit of patience.

For DEs, I’m a fan of the vintage Gilllette stuff but the new razors you can get from places like the Italian barber or classic shaving are good too. You can check eBay or flea markets for the vintage stuff and score some decent deals with patience.

I'm confused. If you're bald why do you have to shave your head? Are you just top bald and don't want to grow out the sides like Larry?

Plus one on the DE razor...get a vintage gilette or an Edwinn Jager DE 89 ...West Coast Shaving or Maggard Razors are good shops. Straight you might cut an ear off or slice your brain open. With that said if yer set on straight go to Whipped dog razors http://www.whippeddog.com he has awesome brushes too. You can buy a shave ready used straight . Google him and he gets good reviews. He's also fast and responsive...a small potatos guy and if you slice your head open at least you did it with a sharp 45 dollar blade rather than a dull 200 dollar thing.

My kids bought me a Gillette Super from my birth year on Etzy or some such place, and it has replaced my Muhle R89 as my shaver of choice. They sure knew how to build 'em then!

Problem with a straight for shaving your head is the geometry of angling the blade just right, while your holding the razor in a parallel orientation, where you cant see eaisly with out multiple mirrors. It's hard for many people to make that translation easily & the cost for getting that angle wrong is higher than with a DE. YMMV

Not even that, I'm bald at the crown and thin at the front. I don't let it get long enough to see how bad the sides are :embarrassed:

I honestly can't wait until the day that it's all fallen out and I don't need to shave again.

There's a guy who's president right now that can only grow one little patch of hair, but grows it real long and wraps it around his entire head.

Ive yet to see or hear of an electric that can match a blade for closeness.

I use a safety razor with Astra Platinum blades... the Braun can do it. It takes some getting onto the tricks though...stretching the skin and the right pressure, moving the razor at the right speed.

After you get onto it the Braun will get so close that the skin can feel somewhat artificial/rubber-like. Not only that but the electric razors break the hair rather than slicing it like a blade does and that is why when you use a blade the stubble feels sharp - sharper than the electric stubble anyway. Shaving with a blade also stimulates the growth quicker.

I wish that I used the Braun all of the time but I always tell myself that I am in too much of a hurry.

OK so I got a Parker safety razor and finally got to try it yesterday.

I made a right mess of my chin under my lip, is bleeding party and parcel of it or do I just need a bit more practice at not shredding my face?

you need more practice. also lighter pressure. if you are used to a cheap plastic (shick/bic) razor then you need to just use lighter pressure....almost no pressure just let the blade do the work because the weight of the razor is enough without adding downforce.

I am ready to buy a straight razor.
I am tired of a double blade clogging up.
I have a heavy beard.
