Amplifers, power, speakers

There’s an anecdotal rule of thumb about amps and speakers: double the speaker area and you get a 3dB volume boost. Does that mean that if a 40-watt amp, played through a 2x12 cab, with the volume knob at 5 ,outputs 120 dB, I would get 123 dB by using a 4x12 cab instead? If so is that because the amount of sound energy produced does not directly correlate with the amount of energy used to produce said sound? And is there a consistent point of diminishing returns, which is why a stack is one amp and two 4x12 cabs rather than one amp and four 4x12 cabs?
