Two distinctly different philosophies on stage… John 5 played to a track that was punched up by a live drummer, and I believe the midi track was switching all of his guitar sounds along with the track… he just kept playing through.

Richie’s trio was tiiiiight… and the bass player in particular was amazing!!

Both Uli Roth and Michael Schenker fell on a Thursday night. That didn't work out for me

Luckily, Uli rescheduled. It landed on a better night too. Friday.
Glenn Hughes is coming to town as well. I have yet to hear him live. I might check that out. Gilby Clarke isn't making me want to rush out to score those tickets though.

DakhaBrakha absolutely fried my brain last night. I saw them years ago and forgot how mind-melting they are.

That's a coin toss on who'd be the headliner. I didn't know they were touring together. I wonder if they're coming my way...

Colin James Trio on Nov 30 was amazing.
Chris Caddell and Steve Marriner made up the trio. Steve played harmonica, bass and percussion (foot actuators).
They did use a backing track on one or two songs that were from Colin’s more commercial 90s-era catalogue.

Overall, a great vibe and wonderful performance.
Mrs DCF wrangled a set list too.

Late reporting this, but last Sunday I went to the bi
Yeah! Got tickets for Hong Kong's (bizarrely named) Clockenflap Festival on the Sunday. Really looking forward to MBV, GY!BE, Franz Ferdinand, and Bright Eyes.

Sparks are playing on Friday, and they've got a supergroup project with Franz Ferdinand, so fingers crossed they make an appearance with Franz on Sunday.

Late reporting back with this, but I had a great time last Sunday. I'll give you the rundown on who I saw.

Arrived, grabbed a drink, and headed for the Bright Eyes set. On the way there I had to go past the stage where a guy called Marcin was playing. Does that name man anything to you? He was completely unknown to me, but he seems to be a 'internet stunt guitarist' type player. Slappy fingerstyle acoustic and then techical shreddy electric stuff. I found it genuinely unbearable. like a youtube short the algorithm might inflict on you if you'd been watching the wrong gear demos.

Got to the Bright Eyes stage, and it was a excellent set. Surprisingly energetic and rocking and just really, really good.

After that we watched TV Girl, who were okay, not bad, but not wonderful either. Kinda New Order-ish.

That took us through to Franz Ferdinand's set, and that was the best one of the day. Really high energy, tight as a drum, great showmanship, they just sounded at the top of their game and the crowd loved them. I didn't take this video myself, but it's from around where I was standing:

After that we watched Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The friends I was with said they 'didn't get it', and i understand why they felt that. The stage is almost dark, they're playing seated, there's a really dimly lit B&W loop on the screen behind them, they didn't utter a word to the audience. There's no 'showmanship' element, but I was absolutely transported by the music. The sound quality was out of this world, and I was almost trancendentally moved by it.

After that we watched a Japanese band called Ellegarden. New to me, but they seemed to have a lot of fans. They were pop-punk, very well performed, I oculd appreciate it in a detached way, but it didn't move me much.

That took us through to the headliner, MBV. I was very excited to see them. The sound was (as you might expect) ridonkulously loud. I was wearing the Alpine Pro earplugs I use to play live which attenuated the volume by I think 22db? That made the listening volume fine, but after the fantastic live mixes of Franz and GY!BE I thought MBV were a step down. The bass was super loud in the mix. and the vocals were difficult to hear. Playing wise it was okay, but they sounded a bit ring rusty? They were good, they played most of the songs I wanted to hear (no 'Feed Me With Your Kiss' though), but they didn't blow me away. As the set progressed the volume got louder and louder, with the closer 'You Made Me Realise' being a stupid, stupid volume. At that even with the earplugs it was too loud.

TL/DR

Band of the Day: Franz Ferdinand

Runner-up: GY!BE

Surprise 3rd place: Bright Eyes (I toyed with putting them in 2nd place)

4th place: MBV
