2013 gear round up thread...

That's great!

Thanks Mark. It's a little scary, honestly. But obviously a HUGE blessing. My new employer is one of our old clients. He had asked about hiring me years ago, but he was down in Ft. Myers (and still is), and my wife still has another 4 years in our county school system up here in GNV before she can retire w/full benefits, so I knew I couldn't move down there. When we got close to closing up my firm, I gave him a call and he hired me without so much as an interview. Total handshake deal. We don't even have a written employment contract. I do everything remotely via e-mail, am basically just at his disposal for whatever he needs.

Just last week I went down to Ft. Myers for the first time all year, met all the staff, and attended my first trial court hearing, ever (I had previously done one appellate oral argument "on the side" at my prior firm, because a client literally begged me to). We have filed a case challenging FL's state DOMA statute (refuses to recognize valid same-sex marriages from other states), and he put me up the night before, and allowed me to appear as second chair counsel, which was nice. It could be a landmark case in FL jurisprudence, so now (his name appears on all the pleadings I've written) I'm co-counsel of record in that. And over the summer he allowed my name to go on an amicus brief that was filed on behalf of the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar (it was written primarily by me, with input from others).

It's nice to be a little more financially secure, and to be working on some important cases.

Pretty quiet on the guitar front. Sold my Epi Wilshire and bought a Gibson LP Special. I did go through a few amps.

Bought a Egnator Rebel 20, Mesa TA15, Super Champ XD, and Kustom Defender V50, and Jet City JCA 20 with cab.

Sold a Vox Pathfinder, Pignose G40V. Got rid of the Egnator and Mesa.

I also changed jobs and ended up earning more than I did before I moved down to FL :thu:

My purchases were very low key this year... I got a bar slide, steel finger picks, and a nut extender to convert an old acoustic to dobro style playing. That's it.

Looks likely that I will add this before the year is out. I fear the Blue Eclipse would scandalize the purists at New England Folk Festival, and might seem out of place for radical union music. This is more traditional yet fitting with my tastes and sensibilities.I hope to have it finalized, if not shipped, before the year is out.

No onboard electronics; this will also work for the nature program Carol, Richard, and I do since I am using an instrument mic for that program.

I put this in the holiday thread by mistake.

So, my year in gear started Jan. 29th. Dean Evo was delivered. http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/estimated-delivery-between-friday-jan-25-and-friday-feb-1.43862/
I sold it to my nephew. Still kicking myself in the ass for selling it. Told nephew, if he ever wants to sell it, he has to sell it back to me. If he decides he wants different pickups, he has to sell them to me. Nephew played at the state fair, then went bar hopping with keyboard player. The Dean, his Dad's les Paul, that his Dad has had since 81, and keyboard player's Fender Rhoads All gone.
May 18th. Without a doubt, the purchase of the year was the Ampeg G-212.
http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/one-ugly-ass-amp-ampeg-g-212.47890/
I love, love, love how this amp sounds. If you ever find one, buy it, nomater how ugly it is.
I bought a couple Joyo pedals. Joyo US Dream. Supposed to be a Suhr Riot clone. I don't have anything bad to say about it but, it's really nothing to get excited about. It's a distortion pedal.
The other Joyo I got is something to get excited about. Joyo American Sound. Knock off of the Tech 21 Blonde. Got it cuz it's cheap, can have fun with the computer with it, and thought it would be good as a backup through the PA. It's a copy of the first version, you can't turn off speaker simulation. Still, it sounds incredible through the Ampeg with son's KOT before it. Raunchy, nasty, dirty ass rock, and roll.
Aug 23 I bought a Hamer Standard, trying to fill the hole in my heart the Dean left. http://markweinguitarlessons.com/forums/threads/ngd-korina-korea.51392/#post-824534
It's a nice guitar. Everyone who tries it loves it. Unfortunatly I think the previous owner changed the pickups so, it didn't need new ones. After reading the thread about who always uses Dimarzios, and who only uses Duncans, I had decided, dam it, I'm going to give Dimarzios a shot. Maybe next guitar.
That's it for 2013, unless you count the Rocktron Metal Planet, and the Carvin x100b. Bought in 13 but, won't get till next year.

Curious about the 2013 American Special Telecaster. What was it you didn't like?

After conversing with Yvonne, it seems my new guitar will be, ironically, just like the first Luna I owned (and regretted giving up):
  • Rosewood Celtic Knot Rosette
  • Triskele Heelcap Inlay
  • Solid Sitka Spruce Top
  • Mahogany Back & Sides
  • Dreadnought
  • Preamp: None, Acoustic Only
  • Scale: 25 1⁄2”
  • Nut Width: 1 11⁄16”
  • Neck: Mahogany/Rosewood
  • Abalone Inlaid Moon Phase Fret Markers
  • Finish: Tobacco Burst

It won't arrive until early 2014, but I'll count it in my 2013 gear, I guess. :hippie:

3 guitars for me:

an old koa Carvin DC200K

a used Reverend Sensei HB honey burst, no longer with me

Then, a new Reverend Sensei HB faded burst

I'm really digging this new Sensei, just plays great :)

I was having an annoying buzz with it there for a bit, was PMing Tele911 to try and figure out the problem, and after lowering the bridge pickup a bit yesterday, it went away. I'm pretty sure it was the pickup adjustment spring rattling. I'll have to try stretching it a bit when on the next string change, like the SD forums suggest.

Just when I think you can't get any cooler, you do. I have a few gay and lesbian friends in Jacksonville who will be happy to know you are on the case.

I'm digging this one

A pretty slow year by my standards, just a few cheapies from what I can remmber.

First was the 1983 Aria Pro II ZZ Deluxe that fulfilled an old teenage wish.

It was in pretty sad shape, but I replaced the saddles and tuners and cleaned it up and it is quite the player...

Then I bought this Sammik bass that I had been ogling for months. I have no idea what model it is, how old it is, or anything else about it other than it is a neck-thru with active electronics and a Seymour Duncan in the bridge. It sounds and plays incredible. I put a fresh set of Rotosounds on it, and it is awesome. I love it. For what I paid for it, I feel like I stole it.

Lastly, I am including the Black Strat of Doom because although I have had the guitar for 5 years, the only remaining original parts are the neck and body. Every piece of hardware down to the screws has been replaced at a cost of 3x the price of the original guitar.

For anyone who missed the related build thread, it now has all black hardware including the Wilkinson Trem, Sperzel style locking tuners, roller nut, roller string trees and a loaded MightyMite HSS PG.

It is KILLER!
