Markbass LMII -> GK NEO 115: Initial Report

Help!I'maRock!

Mediocringly Derivative
After a few weird minutes where the dust in both the amp and cab got to settle, it sounds good. Mind you, I only have what i like as reference for what "sounds good" means. Tone controls are at noon, VLE and VPF are off, gain and master at at 9 o'clock. Bass volume and tone both at 7. Crossover on the cab is at noon too.

The high and low don't seem to do much. The mid controls are really where it's at. I turned the master up to noon briefly and then reconsidered my relationship with my downstairs neighbors. I probably won't be doing that again for a while. This thing is loud.

Overall, I'm happy. I get why some friends pushed me to buy a 2x10 and kinda get that "oh, my tone is over there" feeling from the 15. But for loud, cheap, and relatively portable; I don't think I could have done any better.

Glad you like it. I bet it would sound killer with a nice thick chorus effect. :-P

You do realize I own a Foxrox TZF, right?

What else should there be?

I'm glad you found something that works for you! Should be a great setup.

i guess i'm coming at this from "i dunno what works for me, i just need something for the gig". i've never owned a bass amp outside of the $50 Peavey Basic 60 combo i sold last year. it's kinda like when kids finally cast off their Rage 158 for that Marshall Valvestate combo they just had to have. a whole new world with no idea of how to use it. i'm older and wiser now, and can spend my money a bit more effectively, but i really have no idea of what's in store, or how to use it in a band setting. that's why i went for the rig i did. it's the setup that'll help me determine what i really like. i may sell it or it may perfect, but at least it'll do the job while i figure that out.

yesterday, everything was at noon and the filters were off. today's settings look like this:

low: 11 o'clock
mid low: 2 o'clock
mid high: 11:45
high: noon
filters off

i'm still riding the bass' volume and tone knobs. and i'm started to experiment with pick placement. so far, i've been able to get every tone i want. so that's nice.

also, this thing is incredibly loud and i'm glad i didn't get suckered into buying a higher powered amp.

it's funny. i have little to no visceral connection to any of this stuff. it's loud, sounds right, and plays well. there's no transcendent experience. maybe that comes later. or with more expensive equipment.

It's bass. We don't have the same romanticized idea of what a great bass tone is like we do about guitar sounds. And if we do its one of just a couple of sounds. Personally I like a warm "chocolately" bass sound like Paul McCartmey, James Jamerson and so on...some folks like the Mark King/Flea bright and spanky and percussive bass sound. We call it "chicken bass". :embarrassed:

i also think it comes with experience. get a couple of gigs and that perspective changes with the same equipment. i haven't had that yet. the amp is running at a whisper of what it can actually put out. get a couple of beers in me and a sweaty 45 minute set in front of actual people, and i'll likely change my mind.
