Red Barchetta

My uncle has a country place
No one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the "Motor Law"
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the turbine freight
To far outside the wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For 50 odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
We fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind in my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

That Tesla is an impressive piece of engineering. Production in 2028? Maybe...we'll see. I believe there will be some regulatory challenges to overcome. I suspect most municipalities won't be too thrilled with cars hopping over intersections. I mean, why wait at a red light when you can just hop over it?

The down-force fan thing though..I can see that becoming a thing that many high performance sports cars adopt. It will break the rules when it comes to high speed cornering.

As far as the Porsche goes, does it fly? lol Seriously though, beautiful car, bad timing on the press release.

The flying rocket model will never be able to get licensed for public roads. It will be a really expensive toy for rich people to play with on private land. It will be interesting to see if some rich person wrecks one someday.

They are planning to release 2 flightless models that they expect will be licensed and driven on public roads. However, they may still run into some hurdles with those designs in terms of what level of the tech will be allowed.

Yeah, and it’s a real good thing Rush doesn’t suck. Oh…

And the whole mythology of the car as liberatory site of rebellion and escape is probably more fun than it is real given that surveillance and regulation go hand in hand with car culture. All those cameras are reading license plates after all. Heck, in the US you have fewer rights relative to search and seizure when driving and just a generally lower expectation of privacy.

You can walk down the street high as a kite on your way to do crimes and they can’t make you stop and wait for the K9 unless they know something. And the standard for reasonable suspicion/probable cause is different for motorists vs pedestrians.

I know Rush are a bunch of Canadian hosers so they probably hate freedom…which is why they want you to love cars.
