Help! School me on wahs

Back in my salad days of late 70s early 80s I used to use a Cry Baby quite a bit, but it was the only effect I owned back then.
Decades later, around 2010 or so after getting back into electric guitar, I got myself another Dunlop Original Cry Baby but Ive never really bonded with it this time around.
The travel on it is very loose so it's hard to be accurate, dunno if thats just this one or they are all like that. I dont recall the old one I had feeling near as "floppy" and "loose".
Plus Im just not that fond of its sweep, or as much a fan of the cocked tone as I was back in the day.
For what Ive been doing, an env filter/auto wah is the better choice, but those thing come with their own issues. For the music Im doing now a manually operated wah would be preferred.
Lately Ive been getting back into some good ol 70s blues rock, along with a bit of Motown soul, and kinda want to try the wah thing again.

From my research the two best options out there nowadays are the CAE or the Jam Wahcko at around $200 and $300 respectively.
Dunno if I can justify spending that much for something I still might not bond with.
Any other decent alternatives that would be a substantial improvement over the original standard Dunlop Cry Baby without doubling the cost?

Id def like a stiffer travel and some alternative Qs to try. Not that concerned with built in boosts, etc. but thats ok if the wah is good. One that plays well with a traditional Fuzz Face would also be a big plus.

OK after pulling the wah back out, I don't think it's the tension of the pedal thats bugging me. It stays in place just fine.
I think the problem is the sweep, it's just not long or gradual enough. It goes too rapidly from max low to max high with minuscule travel in between, and that tiny "sweet spot" is what makes it feel loose, floppy, and hard to control. It's like you rapidly twisted your tone knob from 0 to 10 and back instead of a more gradual and slower turn of the knob. I need a Q with a longer more gradual sweep to it so theres more control from max to min, a longer "sweet spot".

I started with various classic Dunlop Cry Baby wah pedals. I ended with a Jam Pedals Wahcko.

The Wahcko is expensive. No question. For me, it was exactly what I wanted in a wah. It has a long sweep. There’s some adjustability to the sound. It’s vocal, not harsh. I don’t even use wah that often, but it ended my curiosity in other wah pedals.

I may experiment first with my SA Spectrum and an expression pedal. I dread delving into the tech but it can prob do just what I want and I won’t have to buy anything.

Some of the specialty ones have uniqueness that keeps them from doing some of the classic wah things.... like I went with the auto-switch type for a while so it would automatically turn off when the wah wasn't moving, but then I found you could only wacka wacka... you couldn't just bend and hold a nasal waaaaahh... for a while.

Then some of them have very individualized curves or eq points that sound like a specific artist... good or bad depending on what you're going for.

After about 5 different wahs of different price points, I ended up with a kinda expensive one, but it does everything I need. It's the Custom Audio Electronics Wah designed by Bob Bradshaw. It has the traditional toe click on, but has a "kick switch" on the right and left side. The red/orange one changes between two different voicings one is more traditional and the other is wider sounding. The other switch is a selectable boost (in case you want the wah to also boost in volume for solos)

Yes I initytiallv was looking at either the CAE or the Jam Wahcka. I just want something well made that does more than just rapid whacka whacka standard fare. Id want something more expressiveand speech like for solos

I can confirm that this is the most vocal wah I've used so far, particularly on the orange setting (okay, this vid calls it the Yellow setting). :baimun:
