National Hockey League 2018-2019

Well, Mr Marchand isn't well liked in this area (the area that he's from) due often to things that he did before being in the NHL. The opposite of Crosby who they all LOVE around here. Nathan MacKinnon is also well liked but being in Colorado and not having won a Stanley Cup yet, he isn't mentioned as often.

So, you are saying that Brad has a .....reputation? Asking for a friend.

And before you say it, Sharks stunk up the tank 3 straight games during the last home stand. Not sure whether they are tired or what, but it hasn't been pretty.

Sid Crosby has one, too. And it sure isn't pretty.

@smorgdonkey I think you are out of date, as well. When Marchand and Crosby were on the same line for the WHC it seems sentiments didn't run as deep as thought. Or, you could just be blunt: Canadians hate players that buy in to the local culture of American teams.

@335clone , all shit-talking aside, I think you haven't really 'got' hockey culture, yet.

Oops, was I not supposed to admit my team was anything but perfect? Too late. Still love their chances. And I know full well that the first season has little influence on the second season, beyond getting invited to the show. It's hard to pick whether we'd prefer to meet the Flames or Knights in the first round

And as you have stated, west coast hockey and east coast hockey are likely dissimilar, culturally speaking. Canadians may hate American team culture, at least until they come here. Seems like we have quite a few Canadian players that are more than happy to not shovel snow.

FWIW, there could be much worse pairings for the final than Sharks/Bruins. That's putting the cart before the horse, but I would enjoy a best of 7 between our teams.

Ah no Canadians don't hate players that buy into the local culture . Marchand is a good player but he didn't get to be known as the LBOH for nothing.
But you also really haven't got hockey culture either...baseball culture would be more correct. After all you would have made Connor McDavid a goalie since he was a great skater from the time he was young :bigg:

On to real issues
Vegas is going to be a problem for the league again. If the Sharks play them in the first round, unless the Martin Jones of 2 years ago shows up it will be a short series. A sub 900 save %age isn't going to cut it especially given the firepower they have now. Some of last night's game was bad luck for him and the team in general but you also make your luck. This year with the additions they have made they don't need Fluery to be all world to win it all, he just has to be pretty damn good..which he is

I don't think sport cultures are defined by players, but by history. And the curators of the history are fans, teams and media.

All sports' cultures emphasize different things; hockey culture definitely emphasizes love of the game, sometimes even above team affiliation. But more than most 'games,' hockey emphasizes history - regional and the history of the leagues involved. For instance, I despise the Canadiens (and their fan culture) but admire them as the greatest hockey team in history.

Conversely, I wonder if "new market fans" know about or can even understand the riots that ensued when Richard was suspended. Or perhaps even the Vancouver post-Finals riots of 2011.

@nuke_diver .... uhhhhh. Yeah, no, I'm pretty sure I'm thoroughly hockey-centric. I played baseball fairly well, but always loved hockey more. Like Keith Foulke.

Marchand in my mind is exactly equivalent to Dennis Rodman - he'll do mildly dirty things that most players do, but he's also relentlessly physical within the rules. He is both highly skilled and utterly psychologically relentless.

I never hate on those players.

Let's move on then, to show what we think is / is not 'over the line' in hockey.

It's not frequency of illegal plays. Like NFL linemen, any good hockey player will do thing outside the rules. It's why there's a penalty box. Some non-Marchand, non-Bruins who play/ed chippy: Nazr Kadri. Gilles Lupien. Mark Messier. Gordie Howe. There's a few that come to mind, and IMO each of them gave (and got) quite a bit. That's part of hockey.

I mean Jesus, it's a sport where you can stop play, take of your equipment and fistfight your opponent, and still stay in the game. Even the orchestrated violence of football is more tightly choreographed (Conrad Dobler may disagree).

And then you have players like Ulf Samuelsson. Tie Domi. Claude Lemieux. Dale Hunter. Matt Cooke. Pronger. You didn't have to do it a lot (Lemieux, Samuelsson), but doing stuff that really is geared to injuring opponents is over the line gamesmanship.

The NHL seems to be cracking down on the headhunting but the moment they get rid of physical play they'll lose a lot of fans east of St. Paul.

Between my Wife's family and friends in the general region, the only person I've ever heard say anything nice about a Marchand is my FIL. He's done some horse trading of cars w/ Brad's old man.

Headshots have no place in sports, it's just too damaging and dangerous. Hockey, baseball, football......whatever. Fighting is fine, but full body weight at speed to the head is a different matter.

I enjoy watching hard checking, retaliatory hits, boxing on skates, and hard fast play. Keeps things interesting. Otherwise, it's just soccer on ice.

There's "lots of people" who voted for Trump, too. Doesn't really make them right or smart.

It's like you're saying "yeah, people from Ottowa don't like guys who play for the Bruins." Next you're going to shock me by telling me that Masshole love Canadiens? I'm confused.

Licking is a bit over the line I think. Does it hurt, no but it's out of line with the way the game should be played. I don't hate BM and I think he's a extremely skilled player. I don't like when he demeans himself by some of these antics.

Can't say I know Keith Foulke. Based on the wiki he's a baseball player from Texas so .

I'm confused.

Take it at what it is; for a variety of reasons, some reasonable & some not, what SD mentioned is also what I've experienced in my exposure to people from the area & the media.
Crosby is typically held in high regard as a person and a player while Marchand is often viewed in a unfavorable light.

That's not the case at all. I don't know how he is regarded in the rest of Canada but I know how people think of him around here - I am just a few miles from where he grew up. People generally know him as a huge ego and someone who has acted like an ass in the area for a long time. The local minor team even traded for him and the fan base was pissed because (apparently) he upset the chemistry of the team which was doing awesome prior to the trade (some of this is listening to locals talk).

I don't think anyone cares where someone goes to play, and 'buying in to' whatever team they are on is still a highly respected practice among Canadians in general (who still dislike free agency - I think people like it when players stay where they are and/or play where they are traded unless they demanded the trade).

For WHC one would have to be universally disliked to not be embraced by Canadians...wear the jersey, get support. Not only that but the Bruins are very popular in Canada (from the ORIGINAL SIX days - who was the poster who hated hearing that phrase?).

how isn't it? I'm confirming that @smorgdonkey post is on the money....there's lots of people in the HRM, specifically Lower Sackville, who aren't too fond of Brad.

Yes, he grabbed a pair of nice sunglasses off of a girl's head in a bar and never returned them...ended up breaking them. Has been known to be pretty rude to people in public. Hopefully he is growing out of that as he is a family guy now I think. The locals really dislike him.

I was in Calgary when he was around here on a regular basis.

Crosby's a worldwide asshole. Marchand too, but with less denial.

I honestly found the licking ... fucking weird, man. It's not Suarez wtih the biting, but ... wtf, Brad? Hey, whatever gets you through the night, I guess?

But that's what makes hockey so fucking awesome: the heroes aren't blow dry pretty boys like Brady. I'll take a dozen Marchands and Crosbys (YOU FUCKING WHINING LITTLE BITCH) over a Patrick Kane any day. And Kadry, much as it makes my stomach turn.

Hockey is the ultimate East Coast sport because it's organized irrational hatred, petty and beautiful, all at once.

Hockey is beyond reason, into a zone of sublime art.

Why is hockey the ultimate East Coast sport? It's not even an east coast sport. You have your directions wrong.
