Your Thoughts On This Headstock

See how far apart the D and G string tuners are? You know that's going to cause a tendency to hang up in the nut. Is this sacrificing function for form or can a good enough builder make this work?

I think about other 3x3 headstocks that split those strings and while not all have problems, many do to one degree or another.

What about the Ovation? You like? Forget about the guitar it's attached to for a moment and just think about the headstock. The string pull is fairly straight and the head out there helps protect tuners.
But does it look good?

I think that the straighter string pull is better. In terms of aesthetics I like the top one better but i agree is would probably have some tuning issues.

Headstocks should be small (for balance) and have straight or nearly straight string pull. Guitar designers who fail to understand this should be slapped until they do.

I agree. It is commonly used as a design element that doesn't function all that well.
The general shape of the snakehead appeals to me but it needs to tilt back a bit.

I think the Dean headstock works on the ML guitar (the one Dimebag made famous) and maybe the Cadillac. I'd rather see the 'small' Dean headstock on the V and the Z models though. I do think that a spread that wide would lead to more tuning problems, unless you have a locking nut, obviously.

The genius of the Fender is the fact that it can be made out of a 1" slab with no scarf joint nor diamond volute. But then: string trees.

Yes, ease of manufacture was one of Leo's top priorities.
His design is easy to make and thin boards are way cheaper than thick ones.
