WTF: Why is YoYo not an Olympic sport?

I've seen the frescoes in Athens and they clearly show the ancient Greeks amusing themselves with the precursor to the modern yo yo. They called it a pla-to

So yo yos are still happening, huh?

When I was a kid there would be a yo yo fad about once per school year. I was pretty competent at the basic stuff, but never got into anything too tricky. Certainly not Olympics material.

"Organizers have announced "virtual and connected" events that will run prior to and alongside the physical ones"

Meaning it is just a demonstration and doesn't count.

Furthermore that article doesn't confirm anything. They haven't even defined what an esport is. I'm doubting any popular games will be allowed. It will likely be new VR of physical sports not Call of Duty or Madden. And no actual gamers or athletes will then care about it.

Nice. If you have any interest, the documentary linked in the OP is a decent watch. My kids and I checked it out this AM. People are doing some dope stuff with yo-yos, and it appears that the niche gear market is pretty robust. I saw at least 5 yo-yos that cost upwards of $500, which probably makes YoYo wives really nervous on par with guitarists.

that's a hell of a collection! I've got an old "no jive 3-in-1" tom kuhn somewhere around here..
There is two in each hole. I've got another case with a dozen aluminum yoyos. Towards the end of the last yo-yo boom companies were dumping stock. I picked up several hundred dollar yo-y0s for $10 to $20.

Remember this? $15

That’s awesome. If you want to unload a couple, I’d gladly buy them off you. My 11-y-o and 8-y-o won’t leave my old Duncan Imperial alone, and it’s driving Mrs. Grits nuts. I’d like to encourage this.

Nice starter yoyo's are the Yomega Raider and Duncan Freehand and Freehand Pro. These are ball bearing yoyos and will have some basic instructions on the back to maintain performance. These will let them learn to throw and then step up to some string tricks.

22-23 years ago was the last boom, but yep, still happening. While not as big now there is a specialty manufacturing thing that's been happening and improving ever since.
