Which Guitarist squandered their talent the most?

Pete Willis

High and Dry is my favorite Def Leppard album... and they were on a rising rocket ship... but Pete's struggle with the bottle left him on planet Earth and he got replaced by Phil Collen who is realistically the superior guitar player. When you're in a Gold->Platinum selling band, that's a shit time to become a foot note.

Both of their original guitar players could not get past the bottle. At least Willis is still alive.

I suppose they're two different case studies of alcohol abuse.... one crashed and burned early, and is no longer famous, but alive.... and the other took the ride all the way to the top and then died after their peak.

Steve's story is tragic while Pete's is more relevant to the OP.

I have to go with a kid I knew back in high school in the mid 70s
Could burn up a 335, played on the Grand Ol Opry when he was 12.
By the time he was out of high school he was wasting his life away on booze and playing shtty country at the VFW 5 nights a week.
Thats as far as he went.

Being murdered didn’t help.

But yeah. LA and addiction has always been an especially nasty combo.

Recorded 2 great albums , and then wasted his thirties on pathological substance abuse and letting down a succession of friendly people trying to help him (often losing them a lot of money) and no music to show for it.

Jimmy Bryant is another one who squandered tremendous talent.
