What's up y'all?

I guess I should probably give some more info. I haven't played at all for years, and didn't get all that far when I played before. Might have something to do with the ADHD I wasn't diagnosed with until about 2 years ago... I've been thinking about picking it up again here and there, and with money being tight and still being in possession of pretty much all my gear I figured it would be a relatively cheap past time (assuming I don't buy too much gear like before ). Since I started playing I thought about this place and decided to check in. Since I was last around in 2016, here's some stuff that's happened:

Starting going to therapy/counseling in early 2019 mostly to try to figure out what I wanted to do with myself; I had been working a retail job for 6 years at the time and knew I didn't wanna do that forever but had no direction on what I DID wanna do. Which led to...

Going to a technical community college in fall 2019 for computer stuff; graduated in spring 2021 with an associates in Cloud Computing. A guy I was in in the program with did an internship at a rural hospital in the area because he knew the director of the department since he was a kid, which eventually got them to add another position which he went into after his internship. He eventually found a new job and told me about leaving, which led to...

Getting my first IT job at said rural hospital in fall 2021. It's been worlds better than the retail job, which is nice. I joined right after they migrated to a new electronic health record system, which they found out sucked; so now we're in the middle of migrating to another system less than two years later. But hey, it'll look good on a resume. Boss is pretty chill, I generally get along with everyone, and don't hate waking up in the morning like I used to with my old job. So, all around a positive change. Currently renting a place near my job that I was lucky enough to find at a decent price for the area, been here about a year now.

In 2021 I kept having friends and family getting diagnosed with ADHD, and whenever they described stuff they had never thought would be a symptom I was like "Gee whiz, that kinda sounds like me..." So I got an appointment with a mental health specialist who gave me an assessment and was like "Yep, you got it." Medicine has worked wonders for problems I would've never considered issues stemming from ADHD, which is pretty nice.

In May 2020, with not much ability to do stuff around people, I decided to pick up photography. I had thought about it for a couple years and that seemed like a good time; there's plenty of nature that had no restrictions on visiting. It's probably been my most 'successful' hobby; I've done it pretty consistently since then and have taken a few trips centered around it.

I guess that's the major stuff, my life is pretty boring. It's cool to see this place is still going.

Nice!

Welcome to:
  • Club ADHD! (I was diagnosed September of '21 right before turning 42)
  • Club IT! (after many years of retail myself I'm now the systems administrator for a school system for almost eight years)
I would say Photography Club... But my camera spends more time in its bag than anything.

What gear have you picked up? And if you're looking for gear still, there's some STUPID deals this weekend. :rotflmao:

Welcome back!
Cloud computing is going full blast now, especially Azure (get some certifications if you haven't already). Epic is the big kid in electronic medical records, but it requires some complex customizations to be worthy.

The hospital I work at is small and i've been told Epic is way too much, both in scale and price, for the facility. We're going to Cerner Community Works; it looks much better than what we have right now. The clinical parts still go over my head but from a UI/UX perspective it looks miles better and easier than what we currently have.

I've mostly been playing my Seagull acoustic (the one in my profile pic). I got my Squier CV tele and Michael Kelly LP-like cleaned up and restrung yesterday. Think something is up with the tele's electronics, probably from sitting up for so long, the output seems way low. The MK has a bit of a dodgy pickup selector and sometimes switching over to the bridge has problems, but other than that it's fine. After playing both I think i'm mostly gonna stick with the Seagull for now, it just feels right to me compared to the electrics.

Welcome back, I have gone a similar path with ADHD, and when I look back at behaviors I did not understand, it make so much sense now.

Hello, and welcome back.

It is amazing what a proper diagnosis and medication can do. For me it was depression and my life got so much better with meds and counseling that I became a counselor. I'm glad to hear that you are having good results.

I was never on this forum until recently, but I was a HCGJ regular from as far back as 2004 until the big crash (2012 or so?). So about a 10+ year absence for me, welcome back!

@BB123 Fellow lifelong ADHD survivor... didn't get clinically addressed until my late 40's. Shit, there wasn't a word for it when I was a kid other than "that kid is smart, but a space cadet.." when my notes would start out structured, by a third of the way down the page they'd start curling, going into little bubbles and blocks... then more doodles... then flip the page and it's a full blown comic book. :helper:

My house is filled with unfinished projects and I try and fail to structure my life to be as efficient as possible, end up procrastinating because I start researching something completely unrelated to whatever project I'm working on, then fly by the seat of my engineering pants to pull shit together at the last moment. :baimun:

I too ended up in the IT Field... I've worked for consulting firms, had my own consulting firm, and now am a network engineer at a Fortune 100 company doing mostly VMware and building server farms.

The best advice I can give to a younger me..... use your ADHD as your super power when it comes time to hyper-focus on a project and work all night.... BUT... give yourself time to explore your hobbies and interests. You need those like oxygen and when you deprive yourself of it (for me it's singing and playing guitar) you will start to lash out at others like it's their fault or just get really depressed. I've immersed myself into too much work over the past year and I'm going to look for some open mics to frequent until my next round of gigs comes up later this summer.

Welcome back! Don't use Kipu as an EMR system. We have been updating and refining it for 7 years and it still doesn't do exactly what we need it to. I do get to add expert Kipu programmer to my resume though.
